Upgrade Dell Inspiron 1545 to Win 10 fails

This laptop came with Vista and I was able to upgrade it to
Windows 8 Pro and both keys are found in the system by ShowKey Plus
Further to my thread Application that will check the compatibility of all existing hardware
I have opened this new thread which is about upgrade failing rather than finding an application to check for compatibility.
I downloaded Media Creation Tool and run it but it failed half way through “Updating Windows” process with a BSOD “We couldn’t install Windows 10 0xC1900101 – 0x4000D Instalation failed in the Second_Boot phase with error during MIGRATE_DATA operation” The pc reverted to Windows 8.1 Pro.
I run SetupDiag which created a log file as shown below but don’t know where to go from here.

Matching Profile found: DebugSetupMemoryDump - C7C63D8A-C5F6-4255-8031-74597773C3C6

DebugSetupMemoryDump - Found qualifying memory dump during setup, but the debugger binaries were not found. Either examine the memory dump here: C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupmem.dmp or install the debugger tools from here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...vers/debugger/ to
    determine the failure.

Can’t find C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupmem.dmp on the pc.
Any help will be most appreciated.

    Hi @scopio,

First, you must update your BIOS version. With your current (A05) version, Win10 cannot be installed.

Go to Dell Inspiron 1545 support page, scrolling down a bit choose BIOS from 'Operating system' popup menu, download and install BIOS A14 version, then install Windows and enjoy it!

    scopio,

This sounds fine but do make sure you enter your Dell service tag in that Drivers & downloads page first so that you are only offered a bios update that is compatible with your hardware.

AFAIK, Dell bios installers cannot allow incompatibility but of course it's better to know before...

Service tag number isn't required to find the Dell listing and BIOS. Using the service tag number returns a list of available drivers based on the configuration as sold. As this was Vista, using the service tag number will bring up Vista compatible drivers.

The latest BIOS, A14, is dated 2012. Check your BIOS version before installing this as it may already be installed. A caution, older Dell's such as this model, do not have a BIOS recovery if it goes wrong and corrupts the BIOS the only option is to replace the motherboard. FWIW, Dell only supports (has drivers) for XP, Vista and Win 7 for this model. If you can get it to install Win 10, no guarantee that all the hardware is compatible and/or drivers available.

Thank you all for your suggestions.
I will perform the suggested operations in sequence starting with zbook suggestion as to be able if I can get the logs.
As for the updating of the bios I will check it out as I am not confident when it comes to updating the bios and I am confused by the instructions on the link firebird posted where Dell says in one hand "
To use it, download the file and copy it to a DOS-bootable USB flash drive, then boot the system to the USB flash drive and run the program." and further down under Installation Instructions it says "
The file 1545_A14.EXE is using the Hard Drive format and is designed to be directly executed from Windows environments. Download to desktop and continue installation or words to that effect!" So, which is it to use a USB or install it from the desktop?

FIRST of all install latest BIOS A14 version. Without that, WIN 10 won't be installed.

You may try install it first from desktop (common way) and if impossible, you may try it from a bootable USB drive.

Will do after I have collected all the logs etc. zbook asked for in case the bios goes pear shape!
