Will do after I have collected all the logs etc. zbook asked for in case the bios goes pear shape!
You prefer the hard way but trust me, it's useless... That bios update applies to all Dell 1545 (bios v. A05) devices, it is a MUST to do and there is no risk on installation but the common, like lack of power supply etc.

You have to do what @zbook suggests if after bios update, Win10 still cannot be installed.

If you are not comfortable flashing the bios - uninstall AV's like MBAM etc and try again.

OK have now saved zbook requested files to external drive and will update bios and try and install Windows again. Will post result later.

I don't think flashing the bios is gonna make much difference .. the issue with second boot is kernel driven which AV's corrupt.

    Hi @scopio,

First, you must update your BIOS version. With your current (A05) version, Win10 cannot be installed.

Go to Dell Inspiron 1545 support page, scrolling down a bit choose BIOS from 'Operating system' popup menu, download and install BIOS A14 version, then install Windows and enjoy it!
Updating the bios will have to wait as I have two chargers and two batteries that will not charge and to update the bios the battery needs to be at least 10% charged. Have not used the laptop on battery for years! Ordered new charger and battery.

Is the computer's Windows 10 performance going to be so impressive that it is worth spending money on?

My own 1545 is OK and I use it with my tuners as a TV-radio recorder so my main computer is not tied down. But I would not spend any money on it.

No it is not worth spending a lot of money on it, particularly as I don't keep data on it. I just use it as a spare pc, to take it to other people's houses to test their wi-fi or just play around with it. The reason to upgrade it to Windows 10, if possible, is just as an exercise.

    1) See if you can run and upload DM log collector > upload results into this thread

    2) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    3) sfc /scannow
    4) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    5) chkdsk /scan
    6) wmic recoveros set autoreboot = false
    7) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread
    8) List all antivirus (automatic and manual, and firewall software in use on the computer.
    9) After all of the above steps run the V2 log collector
    a) Click extract all
    b) If there is another error post a new image
    c) If it able to run then upload the results into this thread
