Not yet, that would be the next step - once I know that there's a good chance the core hardware works because another kind soul shares their success, and the compromises to achieve the goal are workable. I have held off going to clean install to preserve lots of files and settings. I tried USB boot for 1803 - gave up, likewise for 1809, but I had set it to preserve my stuff. Only just found this forum and other 9300 veterans so thought I'd see what the chances are because once I move my stuff I will probably never switch the thing on again.

If you disable enhanced speed step you'd want to enable speed shift.

I have only tried version 1803 on my Dell Inspiron 9300. In fact that's what I am in the middle of trying again now because I no longer download x86 versions of the ISO files.

I have got quite used to only having to bother with x64 updates [my 9300 is my only x86 computer].

(via running Upgrade Assistant)

I must also have tried that [only judging by my notes as I do not remember doing this] in the hope that it would give me better diagnostic data but it did not. My two clean install attempts failed with the same symptoms as my many, many Repair install attempts.

I tried with speedstep disabled

So my current one will fail as well. I'll let it run its course [it is being extremely slow this time and is still on its pre-reboot stage].

My clean install attempts indicated that this will make no difference. Only appropriate drivers are contained in Windows ISO files [and hence in USB installation disks made from them]

it is alternating between trying to give me 1803, 1809, and when I trigger it, 1903

All my attempts have used the ver 1803 ISO or a USB made from it. I have not tried letting WU handle it but since you have there is no point in me trying.

I should remove absolutely everything hardware and software from the PC

reset windows using the recovery options

I tried a clean install twice so I concluded that our limitation is either the bios or the hardware.

I did suffer the occasional 'not come back from sleep' type of issue

- My description of this issue was misleading.
- Task scheduler could not wake it from sleep [despite all appropriate settings being correct]
- It wakes from sleep using the other methods - power button & the wakeup facility in the Bios.
- I also tried some third-party Task schedulers with the same results.
So, have you been able to wake from sleep using a task in Task scheduler?
- If you have then I would be very keen to identify the differences between our computers.

"speed shift" - What are you referring to? I cannot find that in the Bios [my computer is busy but I have just browsed through my Bios screenshots].

You might not have it
But should be in advanced cpu power settings if it does exist

Only a joke. They did exist though - iirc the point was you could reduce CPU speed to make old games playable (otherwise your 80286 PC would run too fast).

It has just reached the first reboot and has failed to a BSOD with the usual IRQL Not less or equal message [I wish that would stay onscreen for long enough to photograph it].

I think that was my last attempt.

By the way, all that speed shift & turbo stuff was irrelevant as far as our computers are concerned.

That bsod is likely memory related or spectre related to access to memory.
