    Denis,
Sleep not an item in the dialogue box or option in any of drop downs. Fast start was on. Now FS, hibernate and lock are off, and only setting for power button is shut down, no other options selected, all blank.

    Richard,

You've not noticed my last post [just as I had missed yours just before that].

Have you been able to sleep since replacing that display card or did you lose it at that stage?

I am confident that it's the graphics driver [aka video driver, aka display driver].
You could try the graphics card OEM website for an updated driver to install.
You could reinstall your existing copy of your driver [in case it has been corrupted in use].
You could use Device manager, {select display card}, Update driver.

I've re-enabled sleep by re-installing the ATI Radeon X300 original graphics card driver which seems to run fine in 1709 but had been demoted on basis of it being well past retirement and likely to halt the Win 10 install. Disproved that link yesterday, but left system at MS basic VGA to minimise uncertainty over what works or not. Now shows sleep in pwr menu so will test the wake up task again. Current windows build = win10pro,1709,16299.1087

    Hi,
There is sleep and there is hybrid sleep
These old machines are not compatible with anything hibernation related and if not disabled as said to might cause bsod or failure to update/ upgrade.

Anyone try a clean install of 1903 yet ?

    Richard,

My build is the same - Windows 10 Pro x86 Version 1709 Build 16299.1087

I'd like to check that I understood an earlier post.
Did you replace the graphics card itself?
    If so, what with?

[About the above post referring to hibernation. I have never had any sleep or hibernation problems other than the ability of Task scheduler to wake it up.]

And I should already have said that the absence of Sleep as an option using the MS basic display driver is not at all surprising.

I tried a clean install of Ver 1803 with no change in fault symptoms so hibernation is not the cause of the problem.
    - Similarly, installed hardware drivers are not used during a clean install so they are not to blame.
    - That's why Richard & I both think it is our antiquated hardware itself.
    - We have also both tried pulling out anything that can be pulled out and disabling anything that can be disabled in the Bios.
    - I think we both have to accept the fact that our ability to run Windows 10 on these venerable computers comes to an end with Ver 1709. It was always an unexpected bonus anyway.
    - I bought my Dell Inspiron 9300 in 2005 and Richard's must surely be about the same age.

    Hi,
Not sure what build 10 was on when I retired my acer aspire
I didn't use that much anyway on it or either newer system now frankly.

Memory amount maybe an issue no telling.

Graphics card:- I got a like-for-like replacement after the spillage. ATI Mobility Radeon X300. The driver followed it up to 1709 from Vista - I always looked for latest version, currently that is 14 mar 2007. (Probably stopped looking 5 years ago lol) There are alternate similarly named cards on ebay tonight, not likely that I'll try the hardware update option again on this unit, not even the aged and failing battery pack. I did buy a new power adaptor as the previous unit just gave up (and guess where all my family photos are...) So, no more hardware, just like to get the latest Windows software
    Denis,
Sleep setting worked as-in unit powered down, but timer did not wake it. I pressed button after task retry times had lapsed. Task works when awake and is listed in powercfg as one that is registered to wake it. But it didn't - at least in the first test. Also the BatteryReport you mentioned is not available - not missing what I didn't know I had - or hadn't - got!
    Cheers

1 I also have a MOBILITY RADEON X300 display card. The best course would be to check Dell drivers & downloads using your Dell Service Tag so you can get it straight from them. Otherwise I could either dig out a download link or post a copy of my driver installation file online for you to copy & use [but I am on driver version 7.14.10.8333 dated 8/25/2006 so yours is newer & possibly better but I'd have to go back to my 2015 notes to see why I chose the one I did].

2 I bought two new batteries about 4 years ago but soon after that my use pattern changed & I cannot even remember the last time I used it on battery. Like you, I would not want to spend any money on it now but, also like you, I did get a new AC adpater a few months ago because the old one was playing up.

3 Thanks for the Task scheduler wake test.

4 PowerCfg -BatteryReport is more streamlined than its energy report but I had to work out where to find the two lines I was interested in and now that I know I just look at those.
