What Happens To Those Of Us Who Can't Update Beyond 1709? Solved

Oh well, thanks for trying mate, mine has just come back from same old BSOD (and I'm not quick enough with the camera either!) but we know it all too well! This time it has tried to apply 1809 x86 2019-05 for the fifth time, whereas previous go it was 1083 x86 2019-06C which it's failed twice. back on 11 June it tried to apply 1803 x86 2019-05C meantime the quality updates for 1709 keep coming through so I guess I will live with it and track the overall story of why it's so difficult to get useful diagnostics out of this process - as an engineer (former life) the open-endedness of it in the current environment is a throwback to earlier times. Times even before turbo buttons were added (I do remember them!) and no, on these beasts of the Dell family, of their time they were star performers and would simply laugh in the face of a turbo button! Have yet to see a monitor as good a quality as this one, and I've only ever bought HD models since, which says lots too.
So unless anyone else has successfully applied 1803 or higher to a standard Dell 9300 by whatever imaginative means, I think it's museum time...

    RJ,

And I should mention that there is no point searching the Dell user forum. I've been keeping my eye on it for quite some time [I managed to help some other 9300 users upgrade successfully to Windows 10 in 2015/16]. The only new posts are by people who do not have 9300s yet claim that Windows 10 will not run on a 9300 at all.

If you do find that your Task scheduler can wake your 9300 from sleep then I'd be very interested in comparing hardware & installed drivers to figure out how I might do so.

    Hi,
So is that computer using onboard graphic's ?
If so can it fit a cheap graphic's card ?

    Hi Denis,
I will set off a task with a wake challenge in it and report what happens, as I can imagine that having my museum piece do some periodic grunt work would be a useful way for it to fade into complete retirement.

Hi there, yes the Dell 9300 has a replaceable graphics card. I had to do a repair when one of my kids spilled cola in it and luckily I was able to find a replacement part at that time, when the PC was about 5 years old. I doubt that I'd be able or have a desire to change that card again, or any other component just because there's some as yet unreported (but doubtless well diagnosed) problem with the software we're using

    Hi Denis,
I must be a dimwit as I have only just realised the sleep option has disappeared from my power off menu at startup. All this excitement of triggering the BSOD when I'm supposed to be working on other things...
I can't even find where to re-enable it.
If you ping me instructions I'll give it a go.
BIOS version A05 by the way, starting to compare PCs one attribute at a time
    Cheers

    Hi,
Even a cheap GT640 might be the difference in bsod or not
    Check out ebay
I have no idea what card you have mind you 512mb.... but any manufacture card would be a lot older and less memory than third party.

Fast start options would disappear if hibernation was somehow disable it does for me using cmd as admin with powercfg -h off

The timer task can't work because my PC won't support sleep states according to the powercfg (that I'm new to and now curious to learn more about!) It says the firmware doesn't support S1 nor S2, and S3 is disabled by the internal system component - Graphics. BTW Can't start a PM as only joined today!

    Hi,
    No need to pm
Disable fast start with command prompt as admin
    powercfg -h off

Maybe it will set the things right
I had to do that first thing on an old 2009 acer aspire or issues would begin
Still have the board no graphic's card for it anymore though no computer case either it's just in pieces now might try a bench test to see if 1903 will install on onboard graphic's though tomorrow if it rains again or this weekend.

    This is enabled at
    [Start, Windows system],
    Control panel,
{if you cannot see Power options, the next step in my list, click on the View by control in that window and select Large / Small icons},
    Power options,
Choose what the power buttons do,
Change settings that are currently unavailable,
set the checkbox for Sleep [I also have Hibernate enabled but not Fast start or Lock]
Save changes [down at the bottom of the window and easily overlooked].

    Richard,

I have only just seen this after posting my last response.

Is it possible that you lost sleep when you changed the graphics card [to which you referred in an earlier post]?

I still have sleep but I still have my original display driver.

Lack of sleep is normally the result of a display driver problem. In your case I'd say that was definite because of your powercfg -availablesleepstates results.

You could try the graphics card OEM website for an updated driver to install.
You could reinstall your existing copy of your driver [in case it has been corrupted in use].
You could use Device manager, {select display card}, Update driver.
