My 2006 vintage PC in my specs (System 2) just auto updated to v1809 via Windows update and all seems fine.

Not 100% defeated >1709 Dell Inspiron 9300... but for how long

Hi - I had a few spare moments to see if I could revive my Dell Inspiron 9300 and go for the 1903. Don't judge!!! I have just finished a round of updates on all my other newer kit and felt a sense of honour applied to try one more time with 9300. It's had dongles for bluetooth and wifi, basic MS VGA adapter driver, basic set up with all apps cleaned off, and I still can't get it beyond 1709. Tried the fixes in this thread - Peter's gave me most hope! did the whole pnp thing and looked in BIOS for stray enabled items, still no joy. One query before I move on... is the BIOS setting for Intel Speedstep worth meddling with?

Turn that off or any fast boot settings in BIOS and in Power Options in the OS. Also look for and turn off any BIOS Virtual Machine/Driver settings

    RJ,

My posts in this thread have been about my own Dell Inspiron 9300. I cannot get mine past Version 1709 either.

I never tried fiddling with SpeedStep.

I did try a clean install with all non-essential hardware disconnected and disabled in Bios. It failed straightaway. I concluded that there was no chance of updating it.

    - - - - - - - - - - - - -

There have been some Version 1709 Cumulative updates recently despite the official end of support having passed. You might know that already.

Mine has once again gone into semi-retirement [as it did for a year or so after XP support ended & before the Windows 10 Preview period started].
    - It is about to spend a week comparing the TV recordings on my original large external HDDs with those on my new huge external HDDs to make sure nothing was dropped during the transfer.
    - I expect to make use of it for odd jobs like this for some time to come so that my main laptop is not tied up with mundane work.

    - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Did you suffer from these shortcomings?
My own 2005 CPU [Dell Inspiron 9300] is happy with Windows 10 up to & including Version 1709. The only limitations were
    - It could not wake from sleep [despite all appropriate settings being correct]
    - It could not run PowerCfg -BatteryReport [so I had to use -Energy instead and plough through the results to get the two lines I actually wanted].

    RJ,

I'm just trying it now with SpeedStep off & a thorough POST.

I'm using a Repair install updating procedure just for convenience [there were no differences that I could see in its failures during this or the clean install].

I'll post again in a couple of hours.

Hi Peter, Denis, thanks for responses.
I tried with speedstep disabled and with the driver signing check disabled at win10 boot. Fail. My OS set up is also out of whack in that it is alternating between trying to give me 1803, 1809, and when I trigger it, 1903 (via running Upgrade Assistant) none of which work of course. They all end in early boot BSOD with IRQ EQUAL LESS THAN ZERO failure. I had reached the conclusion that I should remove absolutely everything hardware and software from the PC and then reset windows using the recovery options. But as I've read elsewhere that is a bit of a leap of faith if there is a persistent hardware glitch not yet mastered (and maybe never will be) that leaves it at 1709.
Limitations of 1709 on the 9300:- I did suffer the occasional 'not come back from sleep' type of issue but that seemed related to a graphics configuration problem, which I somehow managed to avoid. I didn't use the powercfg so unaware if I have that limitation or not.
Looking forward to hearing about any fresh >1709 attempts! Obviously I'll share my results too.

For my Dell Inspiron 9300, yes [Ver 1803]. I cannot tell from the above posts if a clean install has been tried on RJ's Dell Inspiron 9300 or not.

In my case, I tried it on both the existing HDD and on a blank one that I had lying around.

Both clean install & Repair install attempts fail at the first reboot with the same symptoms [stated by RJ above].
