Windows update still not showing 1809 availability

    Hi all,

My sister's laptop - a recent HP i3-based machine featuring Windows 10 home 1803 - is still not showing 1809 as an available update when manually checking under Windows Update.

The only stop block I could find online was the intel graphic driver - I have checked that and the laptop is on a previous version so it should be safe. Also, there is plenty of free space on the file system.

I appreciate I could force the upgrade by downloading the installer but I tend to think that if Microsoft is not sending the update there may be a reason for that.

Is there a way to find out what's going on?

    Thanks!
    tony

Hi, answered many times here. Statistics show the uptake and distribution of 1809 has been very slow and is a relatively small percentage of Win 10 installations deployed.

After MS messed it up so badly and withdrew it, they are being very cautious. And yes, there are some restrictions their 'AI' approach imposes. E.g. see relevant thread in News section on 1809.

Don't be disappointed. Be glad your PC is working. And within a month or so- perhaps- the news will be 1903. 1809 doesn't give you anything extra you'll be likely to need.

    The more controlled approach is
    a. Get your disk image (e.g. Macrium reflect free/commercial) up to date
    b. Download an iso and attempt the upgrade.

    Thank you.

Indeed I don't want to force the update in case MS knows something I don't. This is my sister's laptop BTW - Windows Home.

I was puzzled as BOTH my PC's at home got the update as soon as MS released the update for "all" (one is a 7y-old intel i7, the other is a brand new Ryzen) while my sister is still not getting anything. But it's ok, I just wanted to make sure there was nothing I am supposed to do besides checking for space and that dodgy intel driver!

    Thanks for your input!

I have a test machine I've left running 24/7 just to see if it ever gets 1809 automatically through Windows Update. I know it has no blocking issues because if I manually check for updates it start to install the Features update to Windows 10 version 1809. Restoring its Macrium image of 1803 and left to its own devices, windows update doesn't see or install 1809.

MS seem to have put 1809 on the back burner in anticipation of the 'May 2019 Update' (aka 1903). My test machine has this in common with nearly two thirds of the world's PC that are still on 1803, according to the latest AdDuplex survey.

As I said, I know my test machine is not being blocked because it does find 1809 if I manually check. The fact that your sister's machine doesn't find it suggests that MS do indeed know something that you don't. This close to the release of 1903 I suspect they're not going to bother fixing that blocking issue in 1809. I suspect all their efforts are now focused on making sure the issue doesn't block 1903.

Makes sense to me - again, I'm happy to stay on 1803 until MS says so :)
