I did a clean install and entered key, Win 7 Pro. I too received a digital license which I must assume is linked to hardware.
Retail key? OEM? CoA sticker? Not all keys are equal. But an activated W7 will always get a digital licence when you upgrade it, no matter what type of key it was originally activated with.
