I did a clean install and entered key, Win 7 Pro. I too received a digital license which I must assume is linked to hardware.
Retail key? OEM? CoA sticker? Not all keys are equal. But an activated W7 will always get a digital licence when you upgrade it, no matter what type of key it was originally activated with.

And that is exactly why I would do the upgrade first to be safe.

If you install WinCDEmu you can then mount the ISO and update from the virtual DVD. I've done this and it works well.

    Thanks.

The one I did was a COA sticker.
