Can't upgrade my Windows 10 installation without deleting my prefs...

    Hello everyone.

This is a beginner question, just upgraded my PC from Win7 to Win10 (Enterprise LTSB 1608 I had lying around). Now I downloaded evaluation copy to upgrade to the latest version (1809 I believe), but it says there that I can't upgrade without completely deleting my preferences and personal files.

I downloade both ISOs from the evaluation center, the Enterprise and the LTSC (there is no LTSB version there) - none of them won't just upgrade my machine, but will need to perform clean install.

Is there something to do, I don't want to reformat my hd and begin to reinstall the software I already using.

    Thanks in advance!

Hi, my guess would be that the iso you have downloaded is not compatible with your existing installation. Noted you didn't download it using the Microsoft Media Creation tool (google/ see tutorial section here, and nor did you ugrade via Windows Update.

    E.g. base language, 'bitness'...

Your upgrade to an enterprise build seems a curious choice. What was your Win 7 license?
See available valid upgrade paths (from Pro, Ult, Ent) here:

I suggest check your Windows is validly activated, just to be safe.

The way to protect yourself from such risks/difficulties/fears is to routinely use disk imaging as is so, so often advocated here. E.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + large enough external storage.

In your position I would have made sure I had a current image of Windows before upgrading from '7, and before any further upgrade attempt as a minimum.

Note you can 'go back to the previous build' within 10 days of upgrading.

I didn't directly upgrade form Win 7. I formatted my SSD and installed this version of windows 10 (which is LTSB like I mentioned above.) I already downloaded my Media Creation tool, it said it's not comaptible with my OS version.

I tried to download the LTSC image file from the site above, and it still said that it will only be able to upgrade via clean install and will not save my files and preferences.

Is your Win 10 activated? Or are you just evaluating?

You would have had to do this for other editions - (does not refer to Enterprise though)

What is your Windows build? Win key + r, winver.
Sadly this is not a forum requirement, so we have to ask again and again.
    (1608 isn't a build I recognise)

What is the result of manually running Windows Update from Settings?

What is the base language of your Windows installation?

You can only upgrade using an iso of the matching base language.

    Sorry it is 1607 (14393.2906).

Windows is up to date, and my base language is English.

Thanks - the easiest way to upgrade would be via Windows Update:

I already downloaded my Media Creation tool, it said it's not comaptible with my OS version.
The Windows Media Creation Tool will only be applicable for Consumer version of Product Keys.

Since you've mentioned that you have an MSDN Product Key, it would be best to download the Windows 10 Enterprise Edition from MSDN Subscriber Downloads.

Bear in mind there are two versions of 'English' Windows:
Windows 10 English International version means it is in British English, also known and delivered as Windows 10 EN-GB. Windows 10 English is then the US English version, also known and delivered as EN-US.19 Nov 2017

I'm 99% sure the evaluation version does not allow upgrading from a previous build.
