Upgrade 1803 to 1809 fails on older PC Q9650 quad core Asus P5KC

Upgrade 1803 to 1809 fails on older PC. Intel Q9650 quad core, Asus P5KC, 4gb memory. 500gb Crucial SSD.

"Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0xC1900101: Feature update to Windows 10, version 1809 amd64 2019-03."

Never ran into this during prior updates over the years.

I researched the error and people suggested removing USB attached devices and disabling non essential add on cards, services, etc. I've tried that with no success. Was wondering if perhaps I've hit a brick wall where Microsoft no longer supports these older CPUs and motherboards.

    Thanks,
    Steve

No, that did not fix the problem.

Suggest doing a Macrium image backup to an external drive then you could try doing a Clean Install. If it fails you can restore the backup image and be right back where you are now. Windows 10 - Clean Install

If you don't have an external HDD they only run around $50 to $60 for a 1TB. Macrium Reflect Home Edition is free.

Ztruker's method may be easier than troubleshooting drivers.

If you troubleshoot the failure code:

    Code
    0xC1900101 - 0x30018

    Cause
A device driver has stopped responding to setup.exe during the upgrade process.

    Mitigation
Disconnect all peripheral devices that are connected to the system, except for the mouse, keyboard and display.
Contact your hardware vendor to obtain updated device drivers.
Ensure that "Download and install updates (recommended)" is accepted at the start of the upgrade process.

Already tried unplugging all USB devices and disabling non essential stuff in BIOS resulting in same failure.
I have Acronis and perform regular backups to my home network NAS.
Might try a nuke and pave approach within the next week with 1809 or go straight to 1903 when released. Thank you all.

To troubleshoot you may be able to find a problematic driver using windows driver verifier:
Enable and Disable Driver Verifier in Windows 10 | Tutorials

Plan to use the tool next week.

    Before turning on the tool:
    a) Make a new restore point
    b) Update the backup image
    c) Make sure that you understand the methods to turn off or recover from using the tool

    After using the tool:
    a) Run the BETA log collector and post a new zip into the thread
    b) Open file explorer > tis PC > C: > in the right upper corner search for C:\windows\memory.dmp > if the file size is < 1.5 GB then zip and post a separate share link into the thread using one drive, drop box or google drive

I am in the same boat. Still on 1803 and all upgrades fail. They get to 100% installed then error out saying the updates can not be installed. I too will probably do the nuke method after 1903 is out. I tried updating from an iso file to 1809 and it too failed. Said We can not determine if this PC can run Windows 10. I have been running Windows 10 for years. I really wish someone at MS would pull their heads out of their butts and fix the updates. Hell I would settle for proper error messages that might actually tell us something useful.

You can get better explanations by using the Update assistant [which you can download from the MCT page - right at the top where it says Update now, that downloads the Update assistant].

Personally, I always distrust the Update assistant as a potential fifth columnist forcing me back into automatic WU. So I make an image before running it, run the Update assistant, learn what I can from its results then restore the image.
