    UEFI Drive/Boot problem

    My W10 system WAS running fine (Gigabyte Mobo) with a UEFI SSD boot drive UNTIL I had a problem where I lost all boot. I think it was a SATA cable problem, but it is now resolved. HOWEVER, in the process I no longer boot in UEFI, but into Win Boot Manager. UEFI is selected in 'Bios', but unlike before the only drive options are 'Windows Boot Manager ..drive xxx' whereas before the option was 'UEFI drive xxx'. How do I get the system to 'recognise' the boot drive (Kingston 400Gb SSD) as UEFI? It is still correctly partioned as GPT.

    My Gigabyte system with an HDD instead of an SSD wouldn't boot earlier in the week also. I resolved it with a backup image but I have the same exact problem as you. I boot into UEFI but I only have the Windows Boot Manager . drive xxx too. I'm not sure why but I'm just going to leave it as it is. My system is working fine except for the fact that Windows Updates fail now. I was trying to update to 1809 but it gets to 100% installed and then fails reverting back. Not sure if this is related or not to our problem. If you do find a solution please post it as I'd like to know. Thanks.

    Noted and will do. I would not worry too much about 1809 as I understand there is a major April release.on its way!!

    Windows Boot Manager is the proper UEFI label. It comes from the "description" field of the BCD:
    Code:
    Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.18362.1]
    (c) 2019 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>bcdedit

    Windows Boot Manager
    --------------------
    identifier              {bootmgr}
    device                  partition=\Device\HarddiskVolume5
    path                    \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi
    description             Windows Boot Manager
    locale                  en-US
    inherit                 {globalsettings}
    flightsigning           Yes
    default                 {current}
    resumeobject            {1d0d88a5-4597-11e9-beb9-eb46bfbd0422}
    displayorder            {current}
    toolsdisplayorder       {memdiag}
    timeout                 30
    If you look at the volume # that is given in the BCD device line in diskpart you will find that it is your EFI system partition:

    Code:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32>diskpart

    Microsoft DiskPart version 10.0.18362.1

    Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation.
    On computer: JOHN-LAPTOP

    DISKPART> list volume

      Volume ### Ltr Label Fs Type Size Status Info
      ----------  ---  -----------  -----  ----------  -------  ---------  --------
      Volume 0 D Data NTFS Partition 460 GB Healthy
      Volume 1     E   Android-x86  NTFS   Partition      8 GB  Healthy
      Volume 2     F   RECOVERY     FAT32  Partition      8 GB  Healthy
      Volume 3 C Insider NTFS Partition 476 GB Healthy Boot
      Volume 4 NTFS Partition 478 MB Healthy
      Volume 5 FAT32 Partition 100 MB Healthy System

    Thanks muchly, Guru! That certainly looks ok in bcdedit. However, before the 'crash', I used to boot into a grub menu (I have dual boot Linux) - that has 'disappeared', and do you know why the drive is no longer shown as UEFI in 'BIOS' but as 'Windows Boot manager'?

    Apologies to all for my last post. I have hit myself over the head with a piece of 4x2 and the solution became obvious.. Grub menu restored.....

    Still a slight puzzle over the 'missing' drive description of 'UEFI', though, in boot options. Not, however, a crisis....
