If I am asked for a key do I give the Win 7 one that came with the pc or the 8.1 key because I am running Win 8.1?

Do NOT enter any keys, just press skip. You CANNOT do a clean install unless you upgrade the W8 to W10 and it MUST be activated.

I was thinking of using the Media Creation Tool. Would that install and activate Win 10 while performing a clean install?

Yes it would. The Windows 10 upgrade must be activated before clean installing.

    To reiterate:

If you are using the free Win 10 upgrade, to activate the upgrade, you must intsll it once as an upgrade over a qualifying OS (7 SP1, 8.1).

After you have done that once, you can clean install and activate on the same hardware.

If there's a way of predicting how much the "same" the hardware must be, I don't know it. For example: if you had Win 10 on a mechanical HD, and decided to do a clean install on a new SSD, would that activate? (I hope that it would.)

It was suggested to me that you do not have to wait for the Windows update -I have to look into that. I hear you when you say the installation must be done but I have an email saying you don't have to wait for Windows. I have to read that again.

Also, it was suggested that a clean install is not necessary but maybe performed if necessary.

You do not have to wait for it to pop in Windows Update, which might be weeks. You can use the Media Creation Tool to do your first UPGRADE. Then after you upgrade, you can clean install if you want. Do not enter any keys if asked. Skip them. The first upgrade and subsequent clean installs are supposed to activate without keys.

    Windows Ten

The first thing I did after installing Windows 10 on my desktop was to check for activation and I thank you for the reminder.
So far so good except I need practise like most people.
At this point 8.1 looks good.
It was the best OS I have ever used.
