    Why can't User perform inplace upgrade?

    I'm an Insider. When a new release is ready, Microsoft manage to replace my existing windows with the new version but retaining all my programs and files.

    If I use the latest official ISO however I am not offered this option. The best MS offer is to "keep my files and data" - which is a lie. They trash all my programs, their settings and data. Programs like Photoshop, Lightroom, video editors and so on. All have to be carefully reinstalled and reconfigured and plugins and so on reinstalled, re-registered etc... This is a pain in the bum.

    Why can't users do their own inplace upgrade from an ISO if it is clearly possible as MS do it!

    I ask because in actual fact, Microsoft's auto upgrade system for my Insider builds always fails with two GSOD with memory exception errors. I've entered a separate post about this problem.

    I do it regularly and always get the option to keep programs (assuming ISO is correct version etc). For me upgrade/in-place upgrade work the same.

    What build are you trying to go from and to? Is it same language, bitness, product etc?

    You saw this I suppose : Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade | Tutorials

    @bwallx,

    You say you are an insider. Then you talk about trying to do an in place upgrade with the latest official ISO. You cannot move backwards in build numbers with an in place "upgrade". That would actually be a downgrade, and you can't do in place downgrades. You can only downgrade with clean installs.

    If I'm on 1803 for an example I try to use the 1809 ISO etc so am not going backwards. I've been trying for over two years with various builds. The Insider ISOs are always at least one behind the auto update ones.

    It's always worked for me. That is exactly how I upgrade my computers. I run the Media Creation Tool and save the ISO file to the hard drive. Then I mount the ISO file and run setup.exe from the mounted "DVD drive" that appears. It has always just upgraded my computers with all user accounts, files and programs intact.

    Read tutorials on how to create Isos using uup downloads.

    Then mount latest version as drive, run setup.exe.

    Voilà.
