    Install Windows10 from Ubuntu 18.04

    Hi everyone,

First of all, sorry for my english, it's not my native language, and i hope i'll be clear in my explanations. :)

Recently, a friend of mine gave me a notebook, with Ubuntu 18.04 already installed on it. However, i want to replace it with Windows 10. So i bought to the store an usb stick installer for Windows 10 (I know i could have download an iso version of win10, but i dont have any Win10 license, so i directly bought it). The computer has already been formated, and i have literraly nothing on it to save, so i'ts not a problem for me if the installation of win10 delete Ubuntu.

Now, tell me please if i made something wrong:
In order ton install Win10, I did this:
-insert the usb stick in the laptop
-start my computer and reached the BIOS
-boot the system from the removable disk
-->at this point I have to choose between a 32 or 64 bits installation (My computer need the 64 bits installation)
After that, there's a loading screen, progressing normally, but when it's complete, i get this error message.

"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
    1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer
    2. Choose your language settings, and then click Next
    3. Click Repair your computer

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

    File: \windows\system32\boot\winload.exe

    Status: 0xc0000225

Info: The application or operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains error"

I don't know what to do. All the solutions given don't work in my case. My usb stick is my installation disc, and i don't even reach the others menus (for solution 2 and 3).

Any thoughts about my problem ?

Welcome too the forum. Have you got a serial for windows? It seems the pen is faulty so you could download the latest iso and install that with the key. You need to delete ALL paritions on the rive for it to install

    Boot the installation flash drive.
At the first window, press Shift+F10 to open a Command Prompt.
Enter the following commands in order, press Enter after each one:

    diskpart
    list disk
    sel disk #
(replace # with the number of your hard drive, not the flash drive)
clean (this will delete all partitions on the hard drive leaving it in a unallocated state)
    exit (to leave diskpart)
    exit (to close Command Prompt)

Continue with the install. Select the unallocated disk to install to, DO NOT create any partitions, let the installer create what it needs.

See if that resolves the problem.

    Hi,

First of all, thank you for your answers.

@Samuria: Yes, I've a serial code for Win10. I've downloaded the latest iso too. Are you suggesting to me that i create another usb boot and try to install Win10 from it ? (I didnt get you when you wrote "the pen is faulty")

@Ztruker: When you say to press shift+10 in the first window, do you mean the bios menu, or even before ? Because when in the bios, nothing happens when i press those keys.
However, i managed to open a command prompt, when pressing the keys in the first ever loading screen when i start my computer. Sad thing is, when i type the command lines you recommend, the prompt doesn't seem to know them, and nothing happen.

I've attached the 2 error screens i got so far, maybe this will help. (Sorry for the qualitiy of the image, but i think i can't print screen in these menus.

I know i'm not a genius with computer, and thank you already for your time !

    Hi there
the chances are that as you had Linux on the system the HDD is formatted to some type of Linux file system.
You need I suspect to re-format the internal HDD to NTFS or whatever -- the best way to do this is to download say Macrium Free, create a bootable ISO, boot it and then just delete the existing partitions.

The Windows install usb probably doesn't recognize the internal HDD with Linux partitions on it so goes bonkers and won't see it. With Macrium you should be able to delete the partitions. Other option is to create a bootable GPARTED usb (download iso and then use rufus to create bootable usb) and that will allow you to delete partitions etc as a stand alone bootable partition manager.

Now try to boot your Windows install disk / usb device and install windows.

    Cheers

    Hi Jimbo,

    Ty for your answer !
I tried to download Macrium, but during the installation, an error occurs and close the installer. I'll try the gparted way. If I succeed to boot on my usb with gparted, should I delete all partitions and replace them with only one (NTFS) ? If by any way something fails, i won't be able to start my computer at all (if the partition where linux is installed get deleted), will I ?

For what it's worth, I downloaded Gparted, and I linked you the menu with all the partitions. I tried to create a new one on the unallocated space (127GiB), then restarted the computer and tried to boot from my Win10 usb installer, but I got the same error message, and when I reconnected to ubuntu, the partition was gone.

As you say you no longer need Ubuntu on your PC, use Gparted to delete each and every one of the partitions on the hard disk (including the sda1 and sda2 partitions shown in your image) so that no linux type file sytem is left there (this should give you a single unallocated space). When you then proceed with the Win10 usb install use the whole disk as shown at step 12 in this tutorial.
