ASUS Laptop Factory Reset - Son forgot password

So my son is locked out of his old Windows 10 laptop. It is an ASUS e403s running Windows 10. I don't know which version of windows 10 it is licensed for currently, so I don't want to simply just reinstall windows using USB. I would rather do a factory reset.

Online videos seem to suggest that I can tap F9 while booting to get to advanced boot menu, but this is not working for me. I've also tried F12 and F8. No joy.

Anyone have any idea how I can get to the advanced boot menu to initiate factory reset from outside of the OS, or can anyone tell me how to get which version of Windows I am running just from the login screen so I can be sure to know I am loading the right copy? Thx in advance!!

If the laptop came with Windows 10 from the factory, then just do a clean install from a Windows 10 installation USB flash drive. The proper version of Windows 10 will be selected automatically and you won't even be presented with a choice.

I'm pretty sure it may have come with Windows 8 unfortunately, and was later upgraded for free to Windows 10. Does this still count?

Yes. Windows 10 setup will also use the Windows 8 product key that should be stored in BIOS. If setup does ask for a product key, just skip it and pick the edition of Windows 10 it had before.

There are ways of re-setting a lost Windows password (by getting to built-in Admin cmd prompt from PE ... it's a hack so can't go into detail) - bios password reset require removing/resetting the mobo battery to reset CMOS, however.

This is the reason why I keep my security info up to date:
    Additional security options

And after this gets resolved for the whole family it's a good idea to get recovery codes and save them as a PDF on a usb drive or OneDrive(can then be accessed from another PC).

    Recovery code

You can use your recovery code if you lose access to your security info. You need to print out your recovery code and keep it in a safe place.

And how exactly are you locked out, are you saying he forgot his user name password login or the bios password?
