@Bree - any idea about SFC /SCANNOW failing to start both in normal and safe modes?

Thanks. Have done exactly that. From now on, all ISO files will open with Explorer. I will not try to explain why the iso extension got stranded in my SmPlayer app...
Right this moment, Setup has finished and the software is now ready for installation. I find this extremely uncanny, because I have no virus protection software running...

If you've disconnected your internet- no problem. Do a restart to make sure your clean boot takes effect first...

It will fail if the Windows Modules Installer service fails to start. Try opening a Command Prompt (Admin) and type the command net start trustedinstaller

If it doesn't start we need to investigate why, if it does start successfully, then try SFC /SCANNOW

Yep, that's what the link in my #5 said. This link from that may then help
System File Checker: Run sfc /scannow in Windows 10/8/7

Let's see what the manual upgrade attempt come back with anyway- I'm guessing the same.

    Hi Dalchina & Bree,

Unfortunately, the update failed. Everything went well until the second restart. Then I got a screen saying the computer had been returned to its previous state. This was accompanied by the following error code:
    0x8007042B - 0x2000D
    followed by:
The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during MIGRATE_DATA operation

Please note that this is a translation - everything on my Win computer comes in Dutch (otherwise I would have attached a screenshot), but it's an exact rendering of what was meant.
Remark - Please know that error code 0x8007042B - 0x2000D is nowhere to be found in the Microsoft documentation, the nearest one being: 0x8007042B - 0x4000D

But I am going to make another try. Indeed, I had turned off my anti-virus software - but suddenly now I realised I had arranged this until the next reboot. Now, there is a tiny possibility that the automatic restart of the anti-virus software resulted in the failure. So, this time, I am going to retry the whole caboodle while making sure that the anti-virus software (Avast) remains quiet.

And I'll tell you tomorrow what happened.

Last note: after the computer had returned to its previous state, I checked msconfig and... this was reset to its previous state, too... except the disabled startup items in Task Manager, which had remained disabled. Quite incoherent, again...

So, will speak to you again tomorrow. Now, I'm starting the whole thing again

Cannot upgrade to Windows 10 1803 - The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during MIGRATE_DATA operation

Herewith example of 'exactly' that error:
    0x8007042b - 0x2000d
The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during MIGRATE_DATA operation

    Note that SFC aborted too:
However sfc /scannow stops at 47% with "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation", even in Safe Mode. Here is one of the events associated with this error
    Again:

You (or more likely @dalchina, after you upload the log files as requested) will be pleased to know that your exact error code is used by Microsoft as a worked example of how to analyse the error log files....

    Microsoft said:
Several log files are created during each phase of the upgrade process. These log files are essential for troubleshooting upgrade problems. By default, the folders that contain these log files are hidden on the upgrade target computer. To view the log files, configure Windows Explorer to view hidden items, or use a tool to automatically gather these logs. The most useful log is setupact.log. The log files are located in a different folder depending on the Windows Setup phase. Recall that you can determine the phase from the extend code.

Note: Also see the Windows Error Reporting section in this document for help locating error codes and log files.
The following table describes some log files and how to use them for troubleshooting purposes....

    ....

....For example, assume that the error code for an error is 0x8007042B - 0x2000D. Searching for "8007042B" reveals the following content from the setuperr.log file....

    Hi everybody!

    Read the latest mail.

This is Chinese to me, sorry. Or at least the part about locating the log file. Only useful clue: the filename setupact.log. So I did a simple search, located it and assembled all files and logs generated about that time, which you will find attached.

Because, as expected, the 1809 update retry failed again in exactly the same manner, with exactly the same error code. I am beginning to despair that a proper solution will be found. Oh, how I wish every moment of the day that we would be back in Windows 7. Never a real problem. Everything always spic and span. Never had a problem with Win 95 in all its permutations either.

My only consolation: judging from the countless posts all over the net, I am far from being the only one suffering from this.

Be all that as it may, no solution in sight. And I am ready to give up.

But maybe those log files with tell you something (had to zip them coz the Forum thread didn't accept some "raw").

Thanks anyway for trying so hard. But I don't think we will see the end of this particular Microsoft tunnel.

    Best,

    h
