    Hi Dalchina,

You: "Clearly you have a problem with your data disk - hope you have a backup."
Me: Having constant backups + file duplicates on the cloud, so no need to worry in that respect. However, just 4 bad clusters in a specific partition on a HD is no disaster. Meanwhile repaired those clusters + checked all other partitions on that HD #1 with quite a nifty utility that I use for repairs, DiskGenius. And what do you know? HD1 is back to 100% health (see screenshot). Chkdsk getting stuck was probably on one of those clusters, so that's out of the way.

You: "Are you certain you were in Safe Mode when you tried that? The screenshot shows various icons I might not expect there, but the Volume icon does seem to indicate - as I'd expect- the audio service isn't running."
Me: I certainly was in Safe Mode! The icons you saw at the bottom of that screenshot were irrelevant and part of the whole screen. Should have edited them out to avoid confusion. My aim was to show you just the PowerShell window, nothing more. As you know, in Safe Mode, the screen rendering is no longer in Hi Def but has a bizarre format (at least on my system, which doesn't even show the whole screen!) Anyway, forget about those icons. The fact is that I was in Safe Mode (with Internet capabilities) and that the test didn't work. Anyway, as you say, irrelevant if a manual update will be possible.

    Speaking of which.
In your clear instructions about the 1809 ISO, you mention that a minimum of peripherals should be kept running (I guess that both mouse and keyboard are okay ) But you also mention that I should also "disable any security software". Here just a question: doesn't the manual update need access to the Internet at a certain point? If so, how do I remain secure if I disable my anti-virus software?

About to start with the operation. Keeping my fingers crossed...

    Best,

    haku

Hi, thanks. The reason I asked about Safe Mode was 'cos you don't actually have a Win 10 recovery partition. This is possible with a MBR partition, but just raised the question.

Your partitions look ok by the way.

The manual upgrade with the iso does not need internet access- indeed you can disconnect it entirely.
The point here is to do things as simply as possible- standard recommendations are to
    - not do updates during it (= nothing to download- make the right choice when prompted)
    - try with the iso rather than Windows Update
    - remove any security software

Note: this may well not succeed, but is worth trying.

I am now checking the Clean Boot elements, following the clear Forum 10 instructions. Only one item refuses to be disable in Task Manager, and that is the anti-virus launcher (in my case from Avast, called AvLaunch Component). Guess it won't matter, coz I will disable the anti-virus software for one hour anyway.

Just about to download the update. However... snag. Or rather, more instructions/recommendations to make sure.
I carefully read all the instructions provide by Microsoft in the Download Windows 10 link you provided in your previous instructions # 17. But which button must I click on the Microsoft page? (See screenshot).

You don't want to update now- you want to create an iso file. Create installation media.

Noted you have Office XP - this is incompatible with Win 10
Which versions of Office work with Windows 10? - Office Support
Windows 10 and Office XP - Microsoft Community

Possible program/driver incompatibility could arise from older or more obscure programs - I heard of Download accelerator many years ago- such progs are likely irrelevant now.

    What is 'Manages explorer folder...'?

Screen split - might be an issue- if there's anything that loads extra drivers that might be significant.

After you've tried the upgrade, if it fails, we'll need the logs, which might tell us more.

Just while waiting, I tried the "Download Tool Now" button. And it seems to be the right one because it allows me to download an ISO file.
And I knew of course that I don't want to update immediately! I may be new to such a (for me) major operation, but I'm not completely obtuse.
So, the iso file is downloading and is almost done. So, I'll follow the instructions with the option of using the ISO file directly on the computer... But the instructions on the (purple) download page itself are very confusing. They say: burn the the ISO file on a DVD. While on the other hand, one of their alternative instructions pon the link-page (and your recommendations) say to use the ISO file directly. Why can'"t things just be consistent?

Anyway. It's downloaded, and Ie'm going to try to proceed. But straightforward is different...

Those instructions haven't changed since Windows 10 was first released. At that time many who downloaded the ISO would want to use it to upgrade Windows 7, which cannot mount an ISO file. For them burning to a DVD was a sensible option. These days, for upgrading Windows 10 mounting the ISO as a virtual DVD is far more convenient. The instructions just haven't caught up, that's all.

I gathered that much. It's not the first time such a hiccup happens. However...

    Alert, alert!
The ISO file has been downloaded (it's called, by default, Windows.iso). But when I rt click on it, no trace on the context menu of "Mount" to click on. Where do I find that?!

End of alert. For an incomprehensible reason, ISO files were linked to my video app (in my case SMPlayer). I changed that, and, lo and behold again, "Mount" ("Koppelen" in Dutch, appeared on top of the menu. So please disregard previous message!

Some 3rd-party apps may modify the context menu, or if you've ever used 'Open with', chosen an app and selected 'always use this app...' then you would have changed the default file association for .iso.

To mount the .iso, right-click on it, select 'Open with' and choose Windows Explorer. To make this the default, select 'Open with > Choose another app', select Window Explorer and tick the box for 'Always use this app to open .iso files'.

Edit: Ah, I see you have worked that out for yourself while I was typing. Your Player app probably set itself as the default for .iso so that it would play video DVD ISOs.
