You can do a clean install by entering a valid W7 key, you know...
I thought I had read that you couldn't do a clean install with a 7 key. But you could do an upgrade. That's why I did a quick upgrade, got it activated, then blew it all away and did the clean install.

That was true for the initial release, but since Insider build 10565 (public version 1511 or later)....

    Microsoft said:
Device activation improvements: Microsoft has received a lot of feedback from Insiders on making it easier to activate Windows 10 on devices that take advantage of the free upgrade offer to genuine Windows by using existing Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 product keys....

...If you havenít upgraded to Windows 10 yet and perform a clean installation, youíll need to enter a qualifying product key for Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 or buy a license in order to activate Windows 10.

I can't imagine paying near $200 for a "full retail" version when the OEM version is only $140.
So what if I'm not allowed to transfer the license? I never do anyway.
So what if I cannot reinstall on another computer? I never do anyway.
    Save the $60. Easy.

So I bought an 8.1 full license last summer. Upgraded an XP machine that I expect to rebuild (i.e. new mobo etc) sometime this winter so I would need the full one.

Many do need the transferability of a retail license. Motherboards do fail. Some like to upgrade hardware every few years when the latest and greatest is released.
Personally, I have all branded computers at this time and if a board dies I just replace the entire machine with something newer. I lost my love of building years ago.

    Hey Bree!
I just realized that my Family 3-Pack of Windows 7 is an Upgrade version. I used it to upgrade XP rigs to 7.
Does that change the math here? Can you use an upgrade of an upgrade license?
    That'd be something.
