Your wrong with your steps you create a Mr boot disk you can boot from the disk image and you can't drag it Mr has to write it. Your first move should be to image the new system so if it all goes wrong you can put it back or you may be stuffed. Your idea isn't good you have an old system which may be corrupted and your putting it on a new PC that may be vastly different and all the hardware can be very different is sata 3 USB 3 AC wireless more cores and there is a good chance it may all fail and may never activate.

It's really time to bite the bullet and run with a new system that's clean or you may suffer it the near future you could copy files over no problems. We don't know specs of the old one or the new one as that could be critical.

Thats has varios specs but its £1000 pc to copy an old o/s with all the garbage and possible corruption on to a new pc at that price and specs in my view is total madness No way would I copy any old o/s ont that it may invalidate warrenty

And all the XPS 15's seem to come with 10 home not pro.

Maybe, but not this one. Pro is an option.

Personally I think buying one of those is overkill for mom but if you have the disposable income to do so it is her money.

I would get one of these and just move the SSD to it. Refurbished: DELL Laptop Latitude E6540 Intel Core i7 4th Gen 4800MQ Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit - Newegg.com

I am just sharing my personal view and you should make your own decision. Every year when the big feature update comes out instead of
updating, I do a clean install. I want a healthy clean computer for a year. I understand that this is maybe a little extreme for some. But with
a new computer I really think you should give it a fresh OS and not copy an old tired windows on it! I really believe it's worth the time and
effort. Just make sure you backup every personal files and folders and take a list of the installed software to put them all back on the new
laptop. :) Now, this dosn't mean you don't need to do the backup. Do it once you finished doing the new os on the new laptop. A mom's pc
always need a backup image! (Trust me on this one)

Thanks all. I have been reading all the comments and pondering, I think I am going to bite the bullet and go fresh. I figure it will be easy to find a file on the old computer if I miss something, but fixing hard to diagnose errors due to a problem in the backup/restore to a much newer computer will be really challenging to do remotely.

    One more option:

Use the new or clean operating system on the computer then copy and paste the important files or users folders overnight. Depending on the size of the files this could extend many hours into the next day.

(use an external HD enclosure or a computer that has a secondary bay)
