Install os on external drive to test laptop

I have a Samsung laptop but I would like to build a with Windows 10 however it seems like there is no hard drive in the machine as when I try to boot nothing happens and when I looked in the bios I do not see a hard drive connected

Is it possible to install the os on an external hard drive connect it to the laptop by USB and boot from that so as to test what the machine is like and if I feel it's worth keeping and then I would install a hard drive inside it

This laptop was given to me by a friend and he has never used it hence why we don't know whether it works but it's an I5 and her 6 gig of RAM so I think it's worth a try

    Thanks in advance.

It does sound like the hard drive has died. One way to test it would be to boot from a Kyhi rescue usb. That boots to a Windows desktop with lots of useful test tools so you could investigate further.

For this can I use an external drive that has free space on it? I could create a partition but not sure what type of partition to create and then get it to boot off this in order to install the os

I think the HDD is either dead or been taken out.

I want to be able to build it to see what the machine is liek and how quick it is. Based on that I can stick a ssd in it and keep it or give it away.

I tried to open it to install a spare old hdd that I have but could not get inside it how to get all the space screws but the case would not come up on so I put it back together

What exact model is it? There are usually guides to tell you how to dismantle it, either manuals from the OEM or blogs users who have taken one apart.

If so, I can't find an official Samsung service manual, but this is a forum post with pictures...

Yes, there are a lot of those too. I prefer my service manuals in 'hard copy' though
