I managed to open it up thanks to your suggestions and have put an old drive in it and am building it now.
If the machine looks decent once build I'll take an image with Macrium and then swap out the sata hdd for a ssd

Great news. Remember, a digital licence linked to the hardware ID of this PC probably already exists on the Microsoft activation servers and will activate a clean install of the edition it is for (Home or Pro). The HDD plays no part in the hardware ID so you are free to change that for a new hdd or replace it with the ssd.

If it came with Windows 8 or 10 installed by the OEM it will have a key built into the bios. Setup should have found this and used it to choose the correct edition to install.

Thanks yes it's win 7 home so used that for the 10 install.

Can't work out if this laptop has multi touch on the touchpad??

It's quite slow atm but with 6g ram and an i5 I think it points to the super old sata that I'm using for now.
Need a 256 g ssd anythijg I need to. Look out for or stay away from

Can it activate? Did you use the key from the CoA? If activated, you could upgrade to W10 and get a digital licence (that is, if it doesn't already have one). You may also be able to activate W10 with a clean install using the CoA key.

Both the laptops in 'My Computer' below this post work with multi-touch after upgrading from W7 to W10. They are older machines than yours, I believe.

I'm still using 'spinners' in mine, I'll leave others to comment on that...

The drives to be wary of are the cheap DRAM less SATA SSD's that have recently been flooding the market.
They often have wear levelling issues and fail early.

Samsung SSD's in general are well regarded both for performance and reliability, so for a boot drive make a solid choice...

Looks like my efforts have been in vain.

Didn't realise that the battery is gone as e every time I unplug the charger the laptop turns off.

Whats more is I built it with w10, did the thw whole set up, went to install Chrome and now the screen has decided it won't turn on at all..

I reckon this laptop must have been dropped before as when it was on it would flicker on the right side of the screen.

Seeing as this was a machine my mate found I think we can just bin it as there seems to be way too much wrong with it.

It does have 6g of Ram. How can I check if this is any good for either of my Toshiba laptops? This ones a Samsung?

The different makes are not necessarily important, what is critical would be the specs of the RAM each requires (ddr2/3/4, speed, voltage, etc). You can look up the compatible RAM for the donor machine and your potential recipient machine(s) at the Crucial site and see if the specs match.

But if the RAM is faulty there's no point in even trying. As you can at least boot this machine while plugged in you could test the RAM. Make a bootable usb to run Memtest86+.
