Fed up with v1809 (worst w10 ever)

    Hello.

I have an old pc (Intel 945GM chipset) running v1803 happily. For some reason v1809 refuses to load. I cannot install it neither via clean installation nor on top of v1803. It seems MS in its infinite wisdom is removing support for old computers. This is the third time I am having issues installing v1809. Hence the thread's title: worst w10 version ever.

While I can't say whether or not this is actually a case of removed support, it's simply a fact that MS cannot support all hardware indefinitely. At some point, old hardware is considered obsolete, particularly when the vendors themselves no longer support the hardware and provide drivers. Windows 10 will not automatically upgrade hardware that is no longer supported, so you can just stay at whatever version was last supported.

This chipset is now 13 years old, and most likely does not support most of the modern features of an OS. Particularly around security, and vulnerabilities to more recent hardware exploits.

Also, it may not be your chipset. It may be your CPU. Microsoft has been dropping certain CPU's.

Your post begs some very basic questions.

Is 1809 failing to install because of incompatibility? There's no evidence to support that one way or the other without researching the minimal information.

You don't say how the upgrade is failing. What message do you receive? What's in the logs?

Your assumption is 1809 is incompatible with your PC. Did you try manually installing it or via Windows Update? MS restricts delivery to some PCs on the basis of incompatibility. Manually updating removes that (limited) protection.

Do you expect Win 10 in 10 years' time to be compatible with all PC's made in, say, 2015?

My concern with that is I doubt MS has truly grappled with that.

Judging 1809 as you do on the basis you quote is illogical, Captain.
I had to attempt the upgrade on mine 3 times- there was a very minor thing I had to deal with first.

I'll add that I've tried to clean install 1809 (x64 and x86 versions) onto my old Acer and it stalls at the final stages. I should have kept a photo of what the on screen message said (it wasn't English... something weird sounding). Other versions have installed OK in the past once I learned the hoops needed to jump through to get it to install. Nvidia display driver and particularly the WiFi driver cause massive issues in previous versions slowing the install down to something like 12 hours (due to constant system interrupts).

I learned how to get around the above in previous versions but 1809 has been a non starter. It just won't install.

From your other posts I can see that you specialise in installing Windows 10 on some particularly old hardware. From the number of different machines you have posted about I'm guessing this is as a service for customers or friends.

I too have installed on some older and/or low spec machines, but none as old as this one. My oldest dates back to 2009 (System Two below) and 1809 installs perfectly on it. I told you earlier that 1809 will clean install on my lowest spec machine, a netbook with an Intel Atom N2600. There are no W10 or W8 video drivers for this chipset but the Microsoft Basic driver works well enough.

I am all in favour of giving old machines a new lease of life and admire your persistence, but you have to accept that sooner or later a really old chipset will no longer be supported.

That chipset is 13 years old and likely it has actually faded out of spec or aged, not to mention all the surrounding support components. Chips, electronic components do not last forever.
MS is not going to support something like that, at the end of the day it would be wasted effort.

This is in addition to the previous comments.

So when our hardware fades into obscurity, maybe you can run Linux on it.

If MS wont support old hardware seeing OS failing to function, that means your forced into upgrading your hardware.
I have assumed your digital license can be transferred to new motherboard, etc...Windows as a service, means they really want you to keep using windows, it is in MS best interest to keep their user base happy campers.

Here is how to do that.

Nothing to add, except an opinion: Saying that version 1809 is worst Windows 10 ever implies that you have at least tested it. Yet, you said this:

It's like me saying that Lada is the worst car ever, although I have never driven one, not even as a passenger. It might be the worst, but how the hell and with which authority could I say something like that?

Trying to run a modern OS on pre-historic hardware fails, and that's Microsoft's fault and makes Windows 10 version 1809 worst Windows 10 version ever?

Had exactly the same thing happen with an old HP laptop (dv-5203tu) bought in 2006. Came with XP Professional which was upgraded to Windows 7 about 5 years later.

Used the same 945GM chipset (Mobile version). Worked fine with 1803 even if it was little slow due to the maximum 2GB RAM that was installed. Got the occasional blue screen error which may have been due to the age of the laptop and it's components but other than that it was OK.

Couldn't install 1809, clean install or upgrade from 1803 - tried several times. The clean install attempt would just "freeze" on the blue Windows logo at the start of the install, The upgrade attempts from 1803 would get almost to the end then it would roll back to 1803 with an error message (I think the error was something like "Installation Failed in Safe_OS Phase" from memory).

Anyway, I decided it was finally time to retire the old laptop - sad to see it go after all these years.

I wouldn`t complain at all, 1803 works great

I installed 1809 on the X299 and so far I have 1 issue, it`s with the Movies & TV app

with 1803, if you do not have the app set to full screen the X is always there to close it, and if it is set to full screen all you have to do is huver (not sure how to spell huver)

So far I have not seen it do the exact same thing in 1809, sometimes when you window it, the X is completely gone.

I will keep working on it
