doing an upgrade from 1709 to 1803 and doing it all day long, now 97%

97% after starting at 9 am today and it is now 2:30 pm.
I can let it run till around 6pm, do you think it will finish?

Can I power it down and let it finish tomorrow if I restart it very early, like 6am in the morning?
We use the PC for watching TV on windows 7 with WMC in the evenings.

It is a 6 core CPU and I have 8tb free on the drives with 16gb mem and it is beating on the drive, but its not hung or anything, win10 is fully functioning as it does this feature update presentation! I honestly did not think it would take this long.

took a camera picture, its been at 97% a very long time, and it is steadily accessing one hard drive. I have 1809 on a thumbdrive which I probably should have just wiped it out and started fresh as I think it would have been done hours ago. Since my PC is activated with a link to my digital account, I should be able to do that and have it be ok.

Ok, It said I could restart at 3:30pm, so it is now restarting and configuring at 90%.
I did notice that on the restart, it did not show my windows 7 boot selection option for win7 or win 10, it just jumped into win 10. Hopefully I wont have to redo the boot selection menu. I have win7 on a separate drive in the same PC.

Hi, you already have download and install errors indicated below that, suggesting something is amiss.

The 1803 feature update- rather late in the day, so I'd start asking why not some months back- requires something like a 4Gb download followed by about as much again by way of a cumulative update and possibly more. So that's a lot of downloading.

Now your PC could be struggling with disk capacity on C: , downloading problems, or even disk problems.

Any idea how much free space you had on C: ? And when was the last time you checked your disk?

And could there be problems with the connection or its speed?

You will probably have seen a warning about not turning your PC off.

    steadily accessing one hard drive.
    - hopefully the one with Windows on it...

It has been my experience that a Win 10 feature upgrade will trash your multi boot menu so you definitely want to make a backup. You can use EasyBCD free for that. https://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/

Well, it is all good, it finally booted, My free space on C: and F: is over 500gb which is where win7 and win 10 reside. Reason for no upgrade of 10 earlier, well I mostly run win7 on this PC, so it never got the opportunity till I gave in.
The other 2 drives are 3TB data drives for recorded TV= 6TB of space.

The win10 upgrade DID wipe out the win7 boot selection, it now comes up with the win10 boot selection window.
Now not sure how it does this, as the PC Bios is pointing to the win7 drive as the first drive to boot from. Has this win10 upgrade destroyed the ability to unplug the win10 drive and have the win7 drive boot independently?
And how can win10 change the boot order in the PC bios, makes me think it has done something to the win7 boot process. See, dont like that, cause having both drives being able to boot independent of each other is good if a drive crashes and you want to run the computer.

    Does anyone know?

So now that it has 1803, I should wait a few days, then go check for updates and see if 1809 is ready?

1809 is ready, download the Iso file, open it with explorer and click on setup, this is the best way to do it. (Do not use the Windows Update method)

I just updated the X299 because I was getting an update error message, took less than an hour to update to 1809.

Snap Snap Done and updated and I don`t see one thing yet I have to recustomise, but if you open "This PC" the layout is a bit different looking, I like it. It`s still my dark theme but I like it better.

But yes, If you have W10 Pro set it to Defer Feature updates for 365 days, and update when you want to, not when Microsoft tells you to.

Unless of course you start to get update error messages, like I did today.

I got the same error message on the X299 and the Z170.

So I`ll update the Z170 tonight or tomorrow, most likely tomorrow

I did not know you could do that. Install direct from an iso. I have written iso to disk and then booted and installed.

It keeps all your files and settings, etc...? Not like wipe the drive and install?

You do not need to create a dvd or usb installer. Like I said open the Iso file with explorer and click on setup and the install will begin.

You will see an option at the beginning of the install to keep windows just the way it is, it will not wipe anything out.

Hopefully you`ve made a Image with Macrium before you even start.

Once your done and Happy with 1809, you can delete the windows.old folder in C with Disk Cleanup, and delete the Recovery partition that`s made during the install. I use Partition Wizard to do that.

I just finished doing that. I will now create a image of 1809 with Macrium Reflect

    And Done

For the upgrade failure perform these steps:

    1) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    2) sfc /scannow
    3) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    4) chkdsk /scan

    5) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

    6) There are log collectors used in another forum.
Please run both DM and BETA log collectors and post zips into this thread:

For the BETA log collector: (extract all > open)

    7) Open device manager > click view > click show hidden devices > manually expand all rows > look for any row displaying a yellow triangle with black exclamation mark or unknown device > post share links into the thread using one drive, drop box, or google drive

    8) Open disk management > by default some of the columns are compressed > manually widen each of these columns: Status and Volume > for the Status column make sure the characters within the parenthesis are in full view and that none of the letters are cutoff > post an image into the thread

    9) List all non-Microsoft antivirus software that had been installed and or uninstalled since the last successful windows upgrade
    10) List all non-Microsoft firewall software that had been installed and or uninstalled since the last successful windows upgrade
    11) List all non-Microsoft drive encryption software that had been installed and or uninstalled since the last successful windows upgrade
