    Windows won't update to 1809

On the system update page, when I check for updates it start downloading to install. Then I get an error (We couldn't install some updates because the PC was turned off.) I don't know why I didn't even turn the computer off. I've checked the installed updates and nothing shows as bad, and my computer is up to date as far as 1803 updates go. Any ideas?

    Perform the following steps:

    1) Find a flash drive that you can format (> or = 8 GB)

    2) Create a bootable Windows 10 iso:
    Download Windows 10
Download Windows 10 ISO File | Tutorials

    3) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    4) sfc /scannow
    5) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    6) chkdsk /scan
    7) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

    8) Uninstall any non-Microsoft antivirus with the applicable uninstall tool
Avast Uninstall Utility | Download aswClear for Avast Removal

    9) Uninstall any non-Microsoft firewall software

    10) Uninstall any non-Microsoft drive encryption software

    11) Remove all SATA drives so that the only drive attached is the windows drive during the upgrade

    12) The only attached hardware should be mouse, keyboard, and monitor

    13) Place the computer in clean boot:
Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts | Tutorials

    14) Make sure the drive has > 30 GB free space

    15) After completing all of the above steps perform an in place upgrade repair with the Windows 10 iso

Method for the in place upgrade repair:
    a) Power on the computer

The above steps often fix failed upgrades.

@johnk51 if you don't do anything else, at least perform step #2 of zbook's comprehensive instructions and save the W10 iso to your computer. That way you have the iso on hand so you don't have to continue downloading it.

I've had to set an older ASUS notebook to 'clean boot' to get both 1803 and 1809 to install, that would be worth trying first to see if that would get it to upgrade, then perform other steps @zbook recommends until the upgrade succeeds.

Here's a link to the MS page for a clean boot https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...oot-in-windows.

    Good luck
