    w10 v1809 installation is broken

Or at least it tends to fail on some PCs at the OOBE phase(s). This has been happening to me at least twice now. The only way is to install v1803 and apply v1809 on top of it.

This time it failed for me on an old one core processor pc with 4GB RAM and x64 architecture.

So, it seems that I am keeping v1803 for now.

PS - I hope Microsoft would implement a more straightforward and user friendly installation routine. Get rid of that Cortana crap or at least make it possible to dismiss it.

PS2 - Of course I have checked my installation media and have re-redownloaded latest ISO from MCT. I guess installation chokes on those not-so-fast cpus.

Whilst you can disable Cortana by various means, I make sure I simply never see it unless I want to. Hide the search bar (taskbar rt click, Cortana, Hide) and use Open shell start menu - which has a very easily configurable search field.

    Done.

My wife has a low end notebook, an ASUS, vintage 2012 that she rarely uses anymore but still keeps it updated. The last two update/upgrade versions of W10 Home wouldn't install completely, both times I was able to get it to successfully install by first doing a clean boot https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...oot-in-windows

Apparently something that starts with a normal boot is preventing the new version from installing on reboots during install, it's not worth chasing the culprit down, as I said it's not her primary computer, more of a spare.

Just a thought, when an install fails you might try installing after a clean boot if you haven't already tried it.

@Dalchina: I was referring to talking Cortana during installation process.
@Steve: The issues I am having are always doing Clean installations.

I installed today a GPT w10 installation on an older Intel i3 processor with 4GB RAM (x64). It installed without a hitch. I am redownloading and recreating my installation usb using MCT instead of Rufus. The failed installations were MBR though. I am beginning to think that it only affects older processors (or maybe Rufus is the culprit here, although I pretty much doubt it).

FYI, I have just clean installed x64 1809 on an Acer Aspire One D270 netbook, Intel Atom N2600, 2GB RAM, MBR using install media made by the MCT. No problems here.

It was actually more straightforward before, but people/EU demanded the change, so it asks a lot now. Try to mute Cortana as soon as possible. I think there is an option to tell her to shut up for the rest of the setup.

    Good point TairikuOkami

It seems MS has finally agreed to disable Cortana voice while installing in newer builds. That's a big relief.
