Windows 10 boots to black screen

    Hi,

I recently applied updates to my Windows 10 environment. The next time I booted, it would briefly show the Windows logo and then go to black screen. I could still login to safe mode no problems.
After a week of trying different things and online advice, I stripped all the disks out of my PC, add a new SSD and reinstalled windows.

The install went fine, it then informed my of available updates. Perform the updates, rebooted and have exactly the same issue. I am current running my PC with a single drive, network connection, keyboard, mouse and monitor. It has no other devices attached. The drive is brand new and the only thing on it is Windows 10.

    Any ideas? All help appreciated.

I have a similar problem with the Windows Insider versions. When I get a new update version, it boots up to a black desktop. Rebooting a couple of times seems to fix it. When it boots up to a black desktop, I can use the CTRL/ALT/DEL and get a screen with the Task Manager which all works. Also on the screen in the lower right is an icon to restart. Doing that multipolel times and finally it will boot up to the desktop. In my case the problem is with the Insider installation as I have a dual boot with my "production" Win 10 and its OK.

Uninstall graphic card driver and install latest version of the drive from graphic card manufacturer website.

    1) The computer has iGPU.

Intel Coreā„¢ i7-4790 Processor (8M Cache, up to 4.00 GHz) Product Specifications

    2) Had you tried other ports and used the iGPU?

    3) Update the specs in the "My Computer" section:

System Specs - Fill in at Ten Forums | Tutorials
In the left corner below in your post you find 'My System Specs'.
After clicking it you can find a link a little below that says 'Update your System Spec', click on this link to get to the page where you can fill in your system specs.
System Info - See Your System Specs - Windows 7 Help Forums

Include PSU. cooler, case, peripherals and anything attached to the computer by wired or wireless (mouse, keyboard, headset, printer, xbox, USB wireless network card, etc.)

If you can boot into safe mode then run the BETA log collector and post a zip into this thread:

It seems to be fixed. I was advised on another forum to download the latest ISO for windows, rather than use my installation disks, It was suggested this would eliminate any of the earlier issues with installation media. So followed the advice and the new install worked without an issue.

In the opening post windows had been reinstalled.
    What method had been used?
    a) backup image
    b) clean install?
    c) other?

I did a clean install, without success, but eventually took it to a computer store, they didn't have an issue. Tried it again at home and it was a problem. Turns out issue was monitor, replaced monitor and no more problems.

Also had this problem. Some people recommend: If your computer cannot boot, you can boot into recovery mode and select "Troubleshoot", and then choose "Reset this PC".)

WOW!! well that is a serious destructive option for a non IT guy

but i first tried something else:

    Go to the command prompt

(Windows 10 boots to black screen-annotation.png

or boot a window CD into the command prompt

    and run a CHECKDISK first.

    c:\chkdsk
Access Denied as you do not have sufficient privileges or
the disk may be locked by another process.
You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode
and make sure the disk is unlocked.

so ofcourse we needed some options to unlock ->

    c:\chkdsk /f /r <DRIVELETTER:>

    so

    c:\chkdsk /f /r c:

    and press Y to continue

Mine had some orphaned files and some other issue's with the file system. After fixing this, windows 10 booted right away and the black screen was gone.

Sometimes it is easier to fix then you think.

that is weird. Obviously the monitor was working fine since you were getting an image before Windows would take over. My guess is the videocard was sending the wrong frequency and/or resolution to the monitor.
