Windows 10S - can this still be changed to Home or Pro

    Hello,
I have an opportunity to acquire a laptop with Windows 10S on it and was wondering - is it still possible to change it to Windows Home/Pro without cost?

    Thank you.

Windows 10 S is Windows 10 Home single language. What it means is that it has the same features as Windows 10 Home but you cannot add any display language to it. If it is English US, you cannot for example add the Greek (or whatever) language pack and switch the interface to Greek (or whatever) and of course it has a different license key to Windows 10 Home. You cannot use a Windows 10 Home key to install it. Of course you can add different keyboard layouts (eg Greek modern) to type in other languages. If you don't mind about the language limitation, it's OK

Thank you for the reply, my issue is with 10s only being able to add apps from Windows Store.

Do you have any off-store apps to sideload? If you don't have, then this is not a problem. Otherwise you have to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro to enable all features.

The simple way to find out is to click the 'go to the store' link. The store should then tell you if it will be free, as it did for the OP in this thread who switched successfully for free.

I would run Showkey Plus on it, see what edition of Windows the product key stored in firmware is for.

Windows 10 S is completely different than Single Language.

From what I know Windows 10 S can be upgraded for free via the Windows store & apparently it unlocks Pro.

    Thank you everyone

Thank you. I do believe I will purchase the computer and give it a shot. If it becomes a situation where I have to pay, I can always wipe and add Linux.

    Thank you all!

WARNING! I just found this site that says Windows 10 S won't install any desktop application! It will install only Windows Store apps!!!! I would upgrade to Windows 10 Pro to enable all features, even if I had to pay for the license.

You sound surprised. Yes, that's what Windows 10 S (or the current Windows 10 in S mode) does - 'S' stands for Secure.

    information   Information
S mode is an enhanced security mode of Windows 10. Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise in S mode powers affordable, cloud-ready devices that are simple, secure, and efficient. Users can get started quickly, thanks to self-service deployment and a familiar Windows experience. Low-price S mode devices offer tailored solutions for kiosks, digital signs, and task work. If your device is running Windows 10 version 1709, or Windows 10 version 1803, you can switch from Windows 10 in S mode to Windows 10 Pro.
