update win10 1803 to 1809 using an install dvd?

I have an activated win10 pro running but it has some problems. Can I update to 1809 using an install dvd with out losing my activation or my applications and files?

Yes. You'll be given a choice.

Before you do anything like that, it would be best to image (back up) the current OS drive. The free version of Macrium is popular for that. I use the paid Acronis True Image.

I'd prefer a USB flash drive or simply mounting the ISO to do the update. Either way would be quicker than using a DVD. The DVD would work, though.

There is some risk that updating a corrupt Windows installation won't fix it, but it may.

I have an older system backup from November when my 1803 was working fine, so I will use that if I have to. My PC is dual boot with a good Win7 running well on a different hd. Maybe I should format the Win10 hd bring back the Nov backup and then run the 1809 dvd? The MBR is on the Win7 drive??

You can boot DVD and wipe drive and do a clean install remove second hd and don't enter a serial number it will active from ms server

The point is I need to keep all my apps - MS Office, for example and docs etc, so I can't do a clean install.

Finds lots of errors on the Win10 partition and supposedly repairs them. All other partitions pass CHKDSK with no problems. So, after trying various things, I decided that I should try to format the Win10 with the intention of bringing back my November Win10 image - I am using Image for DOS by Terrabyte - which has worked perfectly for me for many years - and when I try to restore the image, it reports that it cannot write to the disk because of errors. It actually allows you to ignore the errors and continue. I tried that once, but the restore just froze after a while.

So my plan was to format the Win10 partition, but Disk management (in Win7) says it cannot format this partition. Properties for Win 7 are (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition). Win 10 are (System, Active, Primary Partition). Should I convert to Dynamic and then try to delete the partition? I just need a clean formatted partition to restore my Win 10 system file into. HOW DO I GO FROM HERE??

I am now running Check from Disk Manager Properties in Win7, asking it to check system errors and also to try to recover bad sectors.I noticed that it had to first dismount the partition. Is there a way to dismount the partion and then format it?

The reason you are getting the CHKDSK is that you have Windows 10 Fast Startup enabled. If you disable it, chkdsk will not be necessary.

Fast startup is a hibernate like mode in Windows 10 that Windows 7 does not understand and believes the hard disks are in need of fixing..
