    Upgrade

Hi. I have a laptop which I updated from 8 to 8.1 . I now want to update to 10. I read I had to use the media creation tool. It started fine, and about half way through it just stopped, and left a blue rectangle with windows in white. And I just closed the page. Not sure what to do. Tried 3 times. Thank you x

    Welcome to TenForums.

The Media Creation Tool has two functions, the first is to 'Upgrade this PC now' which I assume you were using. The second is to 'Create install media for another PC'. Use the MCT to make an ISO, mount it, then run the Setup.exe on the root of the ISO to start the upgrade.

    5. To Upgrade to Windows 10 with an ISO file

    A) If you have not already, you will need to download a Windows 10 ISO file.
    B) In Windows 8, 8.1, or 10, mount the ISO file, and go to step 7 below....
    ...
    7. Run the setup.exe file to start Windows 10 Setup...

The official upgrade ended in 2016 however you can still upgrade for free.

    Before upgrading:
    1) Make a backup image using Macrium and save the image to another drive or to the cloud:
Macrium Software | Your Image is Everything
    2) Make sure that you have the minimum hardware requirements

    1) For the next upgrade attempt:
    2) Place the computer in clean boot

    3) make sure there is only one drive connected at the time of the upgrade (disconnect cables or remove other drives)
    4) Uninstall all non-Microsoft antivirus/firewall software

If an upgrade won't go, you can probably do a clean install of Windows 10 and activate it with your Windows 8 product key.

It's not complicated, just boring and time consuming. The upgrade is automated and leads you through the (few) steps required. Most of the time you are just 'watching the paint dry'. Set aside at least an hour for the upgrade.

99% of upgrade work smoothly. Take @zbook's advice and make a Macrium system image first. Then you could restore your W8.1 as if nothing had happened if you end up in the unlucky 1%.
