What Are Basic and Dynamic Disks – Features, Differences, Conversion

This may help you to understand about basic and dynamic disks - and point to how to revert to the default- basic disks.

    1. Explanation:
Dynamic disk uses dynamic volumes to manage data. It is a separate form of volume management that allows one volume to have noncontiguous extents on one or more physical disks. Dynamic disks use a database to track information about all volumes on the disk as well as information about other dynamic disks, and the location of the database is determined by partition style of the disk. On MBR partitions, the database is contained in the last 1 megabyte (MB) of the disk while database on GPT partitions is located in a 1MB reserved partition. In addition, each dynamic disk in a computer saves a copy of the database, so that Windows can repair a damaged database by using the database on other dynamic disks.
    2. What to do about it
However, once a disk has been converted to dynamic disk, we will be unable to convert it to basic disk in both Disk Management and Diskpart unless we delete all existing dynamic volumes. Needless to say, this operation will lead to data loss. But fortunately, there is an excellent partitioning tool which makes it possible to restore a dynamic disk to basic without deleting any information.
    - and read on from there.

Here's MS on this for reference:

I'm back working on this and now won't boot at all. I can't get past the message shown on the blue-screen image in my post #25. So I'm dead in the water.

I discarded my 16GB USB drive because of the indication at post #21 that it must be a bad drive. I'll buy a new one tomorrow, but to keep going on this tonight I decided to save the clean install files on a 500 GB SSD - bad idea. The procedure deleted everything on the drive and now it shows up with a different name and with only 30GB capacity. I'll buy a 16GB USB drive tomorrow and work on getting my capacity back on my 500GB USB SSD. I'll probably reformat it. Is it okay to copy the files that the Windows utility placed there onto the new USB drive or do I need to go through the entire procedure of downloading the files from the Internet? The files on the SSD are in the screenshot below.

I have a disk that I made at some point in time and labeled "Repair Disk Windows 10 64-bit" but trying to boot from it returns a message "non-System disk or disk error".

How can I get my laptop back? I think I've tried most of the suggestions on this thread and now it won't boot at all.

The Ten Forums "My Computer" area has the option to enter multiple computers.
The displayed computer is an Acer desktop.
Please post information for the notebook.

    1) Update the specs in the " My Computer " section:

System Specs - Fill in at Ten Forums | Tutorials
In the left corner below in your post you find 'My System Specs'.
After clicking it you can find a link a little below that says 'Update your System Spec', click on this link to get to the page where you can fill in your system specs.
System Info - See Your System Specs - Windows 7 Help Forums

Include PSU. cooler, case, peripherals and anything attached to the computer by wired or wireless (mouse, keyboard, headset, printer, xbox, USB wireless network card, etc.)

To create the USB flash drive from the files and folders on the SSD:

Enter a Command Prompt or Powershell window with administrator privileges with the USB flash drive connected and run:

    diskpart
    list disk
select disk # <-replace # with the actual number of the USB flash drive
clean <-this will erase the disk selected above, make sure it is the USB flash drive!
    create part pri
    format fs=fat32 quick
    assign letter=w
    active
    exit
    exit

The USB flash drive should now appear as drive W:. Copy all the files and folders from the 32GB partition that was created on the SSD to the USB flash drive W:.

    Still no go.

I copied the files to a new USB drive and continue to get the blue screen in post #25. I'm wondering if I don't have the proper BIOS boot options. I don't see any option to select "boot from a USB drive" I have shown some pictures of my BIOS screens in the image below.

I select "boot order" last option in middle left image, then select "USB Diskette..." in the boot order. I also tried "USB CD/DVD..." and that didn't work either.

I'm showing my Disk Management report just to be complete. As you suggest, I changed the USB drive letter to W.

Should I create a bootable DVD instead of trying to boot from USB flash drive?

    1) Entering HP Pavilion dv6t into the HP website displayed 38 results:
Support Search Results | HP® Customer Support

    2) Look in the battery compartment or open HP support assistant to view the product or serial number

    3) Open the HP website > HP Software and Driver Downloads for HP Laptops | HP® Customer Support > enter the product or serial number to view the full HP model > post a share link into the thread and update the "My Computer" area with the new information.

    4) For the HP notebook:
    a) Power on the computer and repetitively click the F2 key
    b) This should open the HP BIOS UEFI diagnostics
    c) The default version typically tests drive and RAM.
If the firmware had been updated to a newer version it can perform extensive, loop until failure and component testing.
    d) Perform the available tests and post images of the results into the thread
    e) For the testing make sure that only one drive is installed on the computer during the testing.

    I finally got W10 installed!

What I did was to burn a boot disk with the install files. An ISO file from MSFT and burned with imgburn. The laptop didn't seem to like the USB flash drive for booting or installing Windows.

The thing now and this is minor - and maybe shouldn't be messed with given my problems getting here - is that when it boots it presents 3 choices for starting Windows 10. Left alone it chooses the first option (on volume 4) and boots fine.

    Should I worry about this?

In any event, I'm going to mark this solved. I really appreciate you guys staying with me on this.

When possible please update the "My Computer" section with the full product number for the notebook.

For HP notebooks often the F9 key is used to to view the BIOS boot menu and choose an external USB HD.

You can run msconfig. Select the boot tab. Delete the two unneeded entries.
