I'm now running Win 7 Home on my old PC. I will be retiring my old PC for a new build and want to do a clean install of Win 10 Pro on the new build. I think the best/cheapest way for me to get to Win 10 Pro on the new build is to
1) install Win 10 Home on the new build and activate it using my Win 7 Home key,
2) upgrade Win 10 Home to Win 10 Pro by buying a $99 upgrade.
Will this work?
Yes, IF the Win 7 key was retail and NOT OEM, as in pre-installed by PC manufacturer. If OEM, the license is good only for that PC that you're retiring. By 'new build', do you mean you're building your own or buying a newly manufactured ? Was the old PC built by you and you bought a Win 7 license ? Your answers would determine course of action. FYI, I built the old PC myself and bought a retail license. I'm building the new PC myself also. So I think it will work then.
Your orig plan sounds right then, move the Win 7 license to new build, upgrade to Win 10 Home then buy upgrade to 10 Pro.
I wish I could shortcut this by buying a Win 10 Pro installation for $99 by presenting my Win 7 Home product key.
The problem is more about changing the edition of Windows. Once you get Win7 Home installed you can use the MCT/Media Creation Tool to download Win10 Home, has been free for awhile. Then you buy the Win10 Pro Upgrade version from the Store which is still showing it at $99.00US. Maybe you could find Win7 Pro on the 'net for less but don't count on it and finding legal Product Key is problematic.
