Can I Still DL a Legit Copy of 1709 From MS?

Recently I downloaded the media creation tool and used it to create install media for 1803 but I am having second thoughts. Currently I am on 1709 but with a new notebook possibly on order this coming week I was going to swap out the HDD platter that comes with the machine and before first boot put in a SATA SSD and install 1803 on it but now I am chickening out and would rather (I think) put 1709 on the new machine. I am pretty sure if I go to the MS download ISO page 1709 is no longer available. Am I SOL? I would prefer not to have to scour the darker side of the Web looking for 1709 ISO's. TIA.

You can grab a totally legit copy of 1709 using HeiDoc.net's Windows and Office ISO Downloader. It copies materials from Microsoft servers. Used it for years with nary a problem. It's what I use myself when I need an older ISO for testing purposes.

Thanks so much! That link is a gem!! Kindly correct me if I am wrong but I cannot use the Media Creation Tool to create bootable install media after the fact that is to just point it at the iso that I am downloading now and tell it to do its thing. What about the Windows USB/DVD Download Tool or RUFUS to create the install USB? Do you recommend any of those applications or possibly even something else. Thanks again.

It is easy to create a bootable usb from the ISO without any tools other than those Windows provides. I routinely make Windows 10 install USBs by downloading the ISO file, mounting it then copying its contents to a USB. I first prepare the USB using Diskpart commands.

To prepare the USB, use Diskpart from an admin command prompt or Powershell. In this example the USB is disk 1, use LIST DISK first to find the number of yours.

DISKPART> SELECT PARTITION 1
Partition 1 is now the selected partition.

DISKPART> FORMAT FS=FAT32 QUICK
  100 percent completed
DiskPart successfully formatted the volume.

DISKPART> ACTIVE
diskPart marked the current partition as active.

Then you can exit or close the command prompt, mount the ISO and copy all the files and folders to the USB.

THANKS so much Bree, however the last command threw me a curve. This is the message I got when I inputted the ACTIVE command:

DISKPART> activeThe selected disk is not a fixed MBR disk.The ACTIVE command can only be used on fixed MBR disks.DISKPART>

It appears you may have previously used Rufus or similar on this usb and made it into a gpt partition layout. The Diskpart command CONVERT MBR can fix this. In diskpart type HELP CONVERT MBR for more details.

RATS. I will investigate later tonight. Thanks so much. I did get this quick return without giving it to much thought:

DISKPART> convert mbrVirtual Disk Service error:The specified disk is not convertible. CDROMs and DVDsare examples of disks that are not convertable.

So I am not sure what is going on. I will further read up on diskpart, gpt and mbr and I may first try and use MiniTool Partition Wizard Free Edition and see if I can nuke the whole USB stick and start out fresh. Thanks again.

No need to 'nuke' the usb, MiniTools Partition Wizard can convert gpt to mbr without reformatting.
