No onscreen keyboard on tablet after latest upgrade - can't sign in

Last chance before my Linx 7 tablet becomes a paperweight:

I don't use the tablet much but it was fine yesterday. It downloaded and installed the September release (before either of our 2 laptops has received it!) but when it finally returned to the windows screen and I tried to sign in with my PIN I couldn't as the keyboard doesn't come up onscreen any more.

The first time this happened I tried to switch off correctly but this also wouldn't work and I had to use the power button.

I tried getting into the bios (as I thought there might be a useful option there) by pressing both the power button and vol+ at the same time. On one try I got a bsod but it disappeared very quickly so no idea what it said. On another occasion a couple of screens appeared quickly and the tablet said it was trying a repair, but this just took me to the Windows screen again, with the same problem.

It now takes a few minutes from power on to get the first Windows screen up. I can then swipe up to get the sign in screen but this is as far as I can get since the keyboard does not appear. All I can do from this screen is power off.

I've tried the power/vol+ combination to access the bios again with no success. Maybe I'm doing it wrong?

Does anyone have any suggestions before it gets converted to a picture frame?

    Thanks

    Linx 7 tablet / reset / reinstall / recovery, Windows 8 - YouTube

there appears to be an "OTG" cable that you can use to connect a physical keyboard... then follow the steps in this video to factory reset it? or possibly just login, disable and re-enable the touch keyboard?

    Thank you for both replies.

I do already have the otg cable. Unfortunately I don't have a separate keyboard so will have to find someone with one to give this a try.

Trying this again after a couple of days it is coming to the first screen more quickly but when I swipe up to the password screen the problem begins. It seems the only things that are then registered are if I touch the button that brings up options such as magnifier and onscreen keyboard (though I am unable to choose any of these) or the power button to shut down. No other actions are registering on the screen.

Nothing happens, my tapping is not registered.

Today while I was trying this I had the navigator/magnifier/onscreen keyboard etc. menu onscreen for a little while, and the tablet started scrolling through the different options, so I chose the keyboard, the menu disappeared and after about a minute an onscreen keyboard appeared (with a different layout from the one I usually get).

Using this I was able to enter my password, though the 4 digit code I usually use to log in was not accepted. Anyway, I got in and the tablet began by completing the update process. Unfortunately after this some things don't work (I can't access Settings, I can't use the Windows icon, the icons on my Start screen are a little blurred, I can no longer access a keyboard).

System Restore is no longer activated so I can't try that; I can't get into Settings to try to get back to my previous copy of Windows or do a refresh or reset of any kind through there; I thought about a repair install or clean install but there isn't enough space left on the tablet to do this and I'm not sure if it would work as only some of my taps are registered so navigation is very hit and miss.

Is it worth trying to delete the WIndows Old files through disk cleanup and then trying a new istall from a USB before finally junking it?

I suspect that the updated Windows 10 might be clashing with your existing display driver and/or any separate driver needed to run touchscreen capabilities.

I think you need to install/reinstall the latest Linx drivers. This could be awkward without a keyboard but perhaps you could download the drivers to a USB on a different computer then connect that USB to the Linx so you can get at them using File explorer.

If installing/reinstalling the latest drivers does not fix things then you could try reverting to the previous Windows version. Naturally, you would also have difficulties doing that without a keyboard.

    Best of luck,

These webpages might help you with getting hold of the drivers
Linx 7 drivers - this seems to have the correct driver download link
    Linx 7 forum

I have only had a quick nose around these links but it looks to me as though there are no updated drivers so you could only try reinstalling the existing ones then reverting to your previous Windows 10 version if they could not cope.

    Best of luck,

Thanks to everyone who responded. I'm going to mark the thread as 'solved' to close it as the tablet is now letting me log on but then shows a hard disc error and closes down without me having time to try to do anything. So the bin calls I think.
