Windows 10 won't boot after fresh installation on Asus Vivobook F510UA

I feel like I am running out of options here.

I have an Asus Vivobook F510UA-AH51 with a newly installed Crucial M.2 SATA model MX500 (CT250MX500SSD4). I removed the originally installed SATA hard drive and am only running the installation with a single stick of RAM (the original). I downloaded Windows 10 v1803 64-bit ISO from Microsoft VLSC and created a bootable USB using Rufus with the following options: Windows 10 won't boot after fresh installation on Asus Vivobook F510UA-rufus.jpg. Don't mind the ISO used in the picture, I tried v1709 after I thought maybe it was an issue with 1803 but I had the same results.

I can boot just fine with UEFI option for the USB. Installer runs without issue. Before attempting to install, I press Shift+F10 and run diskpart to "clean" the drive. Then I select the single unallocated volume and click NEXT to install. No errors are presented during installation, and the laptop is restarted to continue installation...except that it never gets past that. Upon reboot, if I leave my USB installer, it automatically reboots to the USB installer. If I press "Escape" to show boot options after the POST, I only see "Enter Setup" for the UEFI. Once in the UEFI, I can still see the SSD shown (it is disk1) but when I go into the boot menu, it says "The system cannot find any bootable devices".

I have done this installation with all permutations for the following settings:

    Fast Boot: Enabled/Disabled
CSM Support (I believe this is the Legacy/UEFI setting: Enabled/Disabled
    Secure Boot Control: Enabled/Disabled

I have even tried clearing the Secure Boot Keys and defaulted the entire UEFI settings, saved, rebooted, then tried installing with the same issue. Crucial lists this SSD as a compatible part and I believe it is working, but something about the hardware or settings I am using or the way the USB installer is working...maybe even the EFI version is off or not 2.0...I don't know. I've even tried a different USB drive and I get the same issue.

One thing to note is that for the Secure Boot mode, I can't change any settings to "Other OS" or "UEFI". I do see a "Platform Mode" that changes from Setup to User but I can't change that setting manually - it changes based on whether or not the default Keys are installed for secure boot.

I appreciate any and all help in advance!

Hi kristianmartin and welcome to Tenforums!

Can you add this drive to boot options in BIOS?

    Hi @AndreTen,

Unfortunately, I don't have the "Add New Boot Option" as shown on your screenshot and I don't know why, either.

EDIT: The only time I can get that Boot Option #1 to show the hard drive is if I enable CSM Support. Then it shows "P1: CT250MX500SSD4" as an option. If I do that, when it goes to boot I get the message:
"Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key".

CSM mean in legacy BIOS mode. Your Rufus screenshot shows, that USB was prepared in UEFI. Are you in BIOS advanced mode?
Update Rufus to latest version, or try to make bootable USB with MS media creation tool. Have heard lately, that some users have problems with Rufus.
I don't have ASUS laptop, so not familiar with its layout.

    Hi @AndreTen,

Thanks for your feedback. You are correct. I created the USB as UEFI using the latest Rufus version 3.3 and I am indeed in the BIOS advanced mode. I will try the MS Media Creation Tool.

Looks like you're not alone: but no solutions

Edit. have to ask (since I just watch the youtube video of instaling M.2 SSd on this laptop): Did you mount SSD with the Crucial sticker down?

I just got that same laptop but have not done a clean install yet. But, as Andre asked, the orientation of the M.2 is a little tricky. I believe he is correct too. From the Amazon reviews, a crucial M.2 is installed face down. I used a Samsung M.2.

Think OP did it correct, since he was able to install, at least the copy part of installation. SSD wouldn't be recognized otherwise...
But it's great somebody has the same laptop.

Are you converting to GPT after you run the clean command? It really shouldn't matter, but worth a try:
    diskpart
select drive 0 (I assume the SSD is drive 0)
    clean
    convert gpt
    exit

Also, as soon as you see the message rebooting in 10 seconds, pull the flash drive out of the USB port and let the computer reboot itself without the flash drive inserted.

If that doesn't work, reboot into Windows installer USB flash drive, run diskpart again:

    diskpart
    list disk
select disk 0 (again, assuming SSD is drive 0)
    list part

Either take a photo of the results of list disk and attach it as an image, or copy the exact results here.

Also, your uefi settings should be:

    Fast Boot: Disabled
CSM Support (I believe this is the Legacy/UEFI setting: Disabled
    Secure Boot Control: Disabled

After Windows is booting correctly, you can enable Fast Boot and Secure Boot Control if you desire.
