I think the correct syntax is:

    chkdsk C: /f /r /b

Where C the first partition (where Windows is), but it wouldn't harm to repeat the test to the other partitions, replace C with their drive letter. You should see a message that disk cannot be checked and asked to do it at next restart. Reply Yes and restart.

I did run chkdsk yesterday but without any of the parameters you requested. It appears to show there is no problem :-

Today error 55 "A corruption was discovered in the file system structure on volume ??." does not appear, it 'has' appeared dozens of times in the last couple of days but not today. Should I still run chkdsk /r /v or wait and see what happens first ?

It probably refers to a volume that has been removed or changed. If it doesn't appear again you should be OK.

I did remove the second SSD I have in this machine but that was before I did the Repair Install so I'm assuming this can only refer to the current - and only drive I have on the machine at present?

You can also use HD Sentinel so see a quick report of the disk's health. If it is 100% it could still have a problem and you can run the short and full test to see its condition. If the disk health reported is less than 100% you should consider to replace it, especially if it is under Warranty. Health over 90% means that it has a problem but still works. I would not trust it though. Health less than 90% is more severe, I would clone it to another disk so I won't have to reinstall everything again.

Just installed & ran HD Sentry...If I understand correctly it's basically telling me my 18 month old SK Hynix SSD has had it ? So why does HD Tune say its 100% OK. I've also ran DELL's hardware checking software and it also tells me the HD is good. I'm confused. Meanwhile I'll re-connect my second SSD tomorrow (I removed it when I was doing the Repair Install). Incidentally there seem to be some contradictions towards the end of the report - 76% Good - PERFECT - Problematic or weak sectors were not found

The status of the solid state disk is PERFECT. Problematic or weak sectors were not found.
The TRIM feature of the SSD is supported and enabled for optimal performance.
The health is determined by SSD specific S.M.A.R.T. attribute(s): #231 SSD Life Left

If you look at the Help for HDD Sentinel, it says this (I can add no more):

    SSD health, temperature
SSDs (and generally flash-based storage in memory cards, pendrives) work differently than hard disks: the memory cells in these devices experience wear during each write operations and each cells tolerate only a limited number of overwrite passes.
The "wear-leveling" feature of the SSD tries to hide/minimise this effect but generally the health of the SSD is (even if it has no problems at all) slowly but surely decreasing. Most SSD devices report the overall health of the memory cells by various attributes: if there are no (other) problems found, Hard Disk Sentinel reads these attributes to determine the complete health of the solid state device.

This is completely independent from software, Windows, restart, partitioning, formatting and so: as the amount of written data increases, the health slowly and surely decreases.

Quite how it estimates the health I don't know. Mine's 93%- about 2.5 years old, used most days.

    Thanks dalchina

SD Sentinel reported my SSDs health is down to 76%. This presumably means that my nominal 240 Gb drive now has a 180 Gb capacity? This Dell PC is 18 months old and assuming that they do not fit used drives in new PCs, the drive has lost 25% of its capacity in 18 months.

My initial thoughts were to contact Dell as this PC has a 3 year warranty. However I have run Dells own hardware checking software which reports the SSD as being OK. HD Tune also reported there were no problems. Earlier on this morning I downloaded and installed SK Hynix software (the SSD is an SK Hynix) and ran that. It reports life remaining as being 76%. As they actually make the drives Im presuming that this is creditable and two programmes reporting 76% would be quite a co-incidence...

Having just checked I am using ~75Gb of storage, so now that the initial panic is past I can see theres still plenty of overhead but Im still wondering whether I should contact Dell. I suspect they will refer me to their own softwares results which would leave me snookered!

Perhaps I should just carry on and run SK Hynixs own software every month or so and see how quickly the drive deteriorates further?

Maybe I should create a new thread for this as it appears to have wandered off topic a fair bit (my fault)

    Thanks for your comments.
