Using UUP dump to get 1809

Been browsing the stickies in Win 10 News and was wondering whether I could beat MS to the post and install 1809 in place of my existing 1803. I used UUP dump to get a 1809 ISO but not at all sure now how best to proceed. I have imaged my 1803 so free to cause mayhem without lasting consequences. It's a four year old MBR system, no UEFI.

If you have the 1809 ISO file, mount it and run setup.exe

I would upgrade your existing 1803 to 1809 rather than a clean install. Use the method NavyLCDR suggested.

I got the 1809 ISO via the MCT on 2nd Oct. when it was first released and before it was pulled. All four machines I upgraded worked well, none of them lost their user files despite that being the release with the bug.

However, you may not 'beat MS to the post' by much. I suspect we may see the re-release soon, either this Tuesday or the next (which is Patch Tuesday). MS seem fond of Tuesdays for their releases....

Thanks. Maybe I'll wait until patch day, usually Wednesday here.

    Hi there @Fixer

You could try the latest skip ahead from UUPDUMP -- it seems IMO to work quite well -- just backup your current system first and then get the latest skip ahead verstion from UUPDUMP. I've invariably found installing ISO created by UUPDUMP always works for me avoiding a lot of other problems people seem to encounter using the more traditional method such as windows update.

Advantage of UUPDUMP also is that you can get these releases without joining insider program - and also the skip ahead program is currently closed for new people to join.

Disadvantage is that the release expires about a week before Xmas - but there will certainly be something else long before then -- if you don't like the release just restore old version.

For skip ahead release I would recommend an UPDATE rather than a clean release since you are less likely to have problems with any hardware drivers - windows won't update any that it can't find of course !!! and you want to see if your installed programs and settings still work properly.

A Clean install is good at a final release but for "Intermediate stuff" I'd go for an update -- other people may disagree --choose what works for you best though.

    Cheers

    Hi there
    @Fixer

if you want the skip ahead release from UUPDUMP this is what you should see (you can select English UK, and specific edition of Windows -- I'm using X-64 PRO base language UK English. You can install extra languages afterwards if you do clean install -- with update you don't need to.

    Hi @jimbo45

Thanks for the advice but think I'll just hold off to see whether it is released next week. Running my ISO could be a lot of wasted time for little gain, but anyway before I can run it I need to know how to mount it. I don't want to burn it to DVD and do a clean install.

EDIT - it's ok, I'm extracting it to a folder on another partition and will run setup from there.

Install has stopped with this. AFAIK KB4464619 is the update that paused 1809 so do I have to disconnect before running my ISO?

Looks to me like it is not possible to upgrade 1803 to 1809 using this method. Trying to update when offline produces the same error.

I tested this with the original 1809 ISO I made when it was released on Oct. 2nd. (and which I used successfully back then to upgrade four machines). It too now give that error.

However, if you really want to update to 1809 by this method you can.

That would be because you first tried it while connected to the internet. It downloaded the information that told it it not to install. Then you disconnected and tried again, but the information was still on the PC. The trick to make it forget that information and let you do an install while offline is to delete the hidden C:\$WINDOWS.~BT folder.

However, as there's a good chance we'll see the real thing soon, my advice would still be to 'wait and see'.
