1803 KB4462933 Update Just Caused Loss of Files and Apps - Anyone Else

This is Weird - I thought this only happened with the 1809 upgrade.

I left my computer for a few minutes and touched the keyboard to activate the screen when I came back.

On activation, there was text on the screen suggesting than an indeterminate update was underway. When it finished, and I logged in, all of my personalization was gone - icons were missing from the task bar and desktop and all files were missing from Pictures and Videos folders. Previously installed apps such as the Office 365 apps and Windows Live Mail were not installed.

I recall there was a nag screen present that suggested the applied update was the October update, but when I looked in the update log, it suggested the most recent update was KB4462933 for 1803.

Anyone else experienced this and know of a recovery option ?

    TIA

Nothing as untoward as that reported in comments following the News thread on the update (News contains a thread per update per build with download links, comments).

Hopefully you use disk imaging as I and others continually urge users to use routinely- e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + external storage for image sets.

If so, restoring a previous disk image would probably be the option I'd go for...

Another possibility is that perhaps you've somehow been assigned a temporary user profile, a problem some have experienced with some upgrades.

    Thanks for the info.

Still has me puzzled though. I use HDClone to make system images on a regular basis and had one that was about 3 weeks old.

I exchanged the corrupt system disk for the most recent image and things were back to normal in about 10 minutes. However, update services did subsequently apply one update that left me running at 17134.345 but also removed all update history.

The thing that stands out as odd, is the fact that the update that caused the original problems ran on its own, not following a typical manual shutdown/restart cycle.

Not all updates require a restart. Guess we won't know what happened with that one... Good you have appropriate backups.
