That's right!. Windows 2.1. It's a little crazy to think of all that has changed since the early Winodws and DOS days.

Frunobulax, Windows 286 and 386 were so named because of the ability to use specific features of the Intel 80286 and Intel 80386 CPUs back then (frequently simply called the 286 and 386). In case you are interested, here is more info:

    Wikipedia - Windows 2.1x
    Intel 80286
    Intel 80386

You mentioned Windows 3.1. That was a special version for me because Windows 3.1 release day was actually my first day working for Microsoft where I did Technical support for over 10 years. I remember having to spell A-U-T-O-E-X-E-C-DOT-B-A-T and C-O-N-F-I-G-DOT-S-Y-S like a hundred times a day. Also, manually configuring interrupts and I/O addresses, because plug and play (or plug and pray as it was called in the early days) didn't exist yet. Manually optimizing memory usage was another fun one. Then there installing Windows NT and Windows 95 from floppy disk. Try doing that over the phone for hours on end!

Funny that in all these years I never really seriously played with unattended setup.

. Windows 286 and Windows 386 were marketing names for Windows 2.1, released in May 1988.
oh sorry...I was still using DOS 4.0 I think it was.... I was using DOS up till the bitter end around 1993.

YEAH Autoexec.bat and Config.sys the mystery of where my newly created folder went...then I discovered the path statement. yeah trying different combinations of IRQs , jumpers on the card and settings in config.sys , extended memory ..XMS was it and himem.sys. LOL yeah the floppy disks, was it 25 diskettes, something I had was 25 diskettes maybe it was Cisco , can't remember the name it was like pre active directory. would put in diskette 15, then it would say put in diskette 3 again then diskette 5 again then it would ask for diskette 16. Formatting MFM hard drives , dial up modems, bulletin boards and SYSOPS , waiting till 10 pm rolled around when the telephone rates dropped. CompuServe, computer shows..buying 1meg Dimm's , a vendor selling $25 1.4meg floppy drives...the line went out the door...it was all fun.
