Windows 10 and 1809 update with OLD drivers

Hi Community!

Yesterday my Windows 10 proposed (I did not manually press the "Check for Updates...") to update my W10 Pro 1803 for 1809. The Windows update included a bunch of old driver versions (e.g. graphics adapter, display, NIC...) - basically all those driver "updates" (e.g. Intel HD4000 driver is a Lenovo forked one on my T431s Thinkpad laptop) were older ones than I have currently installed.

I have well maintained and updated my system & drivers through Lenovo System Update tool (and Windows updates through Windows). After reading from the net (e.g. Twitter, Reddit and various other channels) that users should wait for updated drivers first.

So my question actually is: are we expected to receive somekind fix 1) from Lenovo or from 2) Microsoft regarding this old drivers issue?

At the moment, I will not install 1809 or driver update(s) offered by Microsoft (updates put on hold for 30 days).

The theory is that MS will deliver drivers most appropriate for your system. Sometimes it's possible to find later drivers manually. I'm just wondering, did you ever solve a problem or experience any improvement by manually updating an existing driver? I'm also hoping you didn't use a driver updater tool.

I.e. does worrying about updating drivers when you already have one that works achieve anything?

That said, in a minority of cases, people do experience driver-related problems when installing a feature upgrade. But then there are two possibilities:
a. manual installation
b. offered by Windows update

In the first of these, the user may actually be acting to overcome a block MS has imposed by not offering an upgrade.

In any event, I quite agree with delaying upgrading as regards reducing risk. I'd prefer to wait until at least after the first update following.

Shortly:

1) No, I have never used any un-official 3rd party (read: e.g. Driver Updater etc.) driver update tool
2) Part of the drivers are provided by Windows (aka MSFT), part by manufacturers (especially Intel and Lenovo)

So I have used three updaters:

1) Microsoft Windows 2) Lenovo System updater and 3) Intel driver updater.

This is 1st time (for me) that I see (and have red from the net) Windows messing up with proposing outdated driver updates to my system. Considering also the reported data-losses (from ppl user-directories), seems that MSFT has some real major issues in their hands with regards to 1809 update.

So yes, I will keep my system on 1803 until things get better

Yet it will be very interesting to see how this is overall solved.

Yes, just seen that (data loss) - 1st major issue I think.. naturally if you have any slightly unusual hardware, better to wait for the manufacturers to catch up if necessary. I have a mental picture of a huge database of drivers maintained by MS/manufacturers and some AI program making a decision as to whether to offer a feature update to particular machines or not.

There are problems with Windows 10 build 1809 and the rollout was placed on hold.

The iso available on the Microsoft web site as of 10/6/18 is build 1803.

Windows will automatically update Microsoft and non-Microsoft drivers.

There are settings that can be modified to prevent the Windows updates of non-Microsoft drivers:

Is this something that should actually be done (disabling those 3rd party driver updates) aka recommended to prevent MSFT to update non-MSFT signed drivers?

Sometimes there are new drivers that cause BSOD.
These drivers need to be rolled back.
Windows will automatically update the driver to a driver that causes a bsod until the driver is modified.
This happened with Realtek/Asus drivers approximately two years ago.
The goal is performance with a stable computer environment.
When there are recurrent bsod various drivers are tried to find a stable environment.
If different drivers cause bsod then the hardware needs to be checked.

All of the drivers should be from the computer or motherboard manufacturer's website.
For drivers not displayed on the computer or motherboard manufacturer's website the component manufacturer websites should be used (Intel, Nvidia, AMD, Killer Networks, Realtek, etc.)
Third party websites that modify or install drivers should be avoided as unknown files can be installed.

Personally, I don't use any updater program other than Windows Update, I get my Asus drivers from Asus Support downloads where driver are offered from my model by serial number. I upgrade Nvidia drivers from Nvidia directly and Intel driver directly from Intel downloads I find the updater seldom finds the correct drivers for my particular notebook. I do use Pro Windows on all computer so I have Driver updates Blocked from Windows updates, I don't believe this protect me from upgrades like 1809, in fact, I did have to reinstall Nvidia driver All my other hardware seems to have maintained the drivers that were already installed and working.
I would expect that Lenovo to patch any of there drivers for current notebooks that had come natively with Windows 10, you might go look on there support website they may already have? Microsoft could care less unless it affects millions of users.
My Experience with my G75VW that came with Windows 7 Pro SP1 and a free upgrade to Windows 8, I was able to upgrade it to windows 8.1 and that is where it continues to run today. Some people have figured out how to get that model to run on 10 with most hardware running but it's an ongoing battle to continue to finding drivers that will work with the latest versions of Windows 10. I chose to just leave it on 8.1 until it dies.

I don't know if it was a driver issue but I have a Dell desktop (3 years old) and the 1809 update changed the screen settings to something not supported by my monitor. So I ended up with a monitor saying "out of range". Not much you can do when you can't even get to see a logon screen. Wasted half a day of my life getting it working again and I consider myself to have a better chance of fixing these things than the average user. All my drivers were the very latest, before 1809.
