Thanks for the trouble to go thru that. There's nothing I see in there that could be used. Not one .esd or .cab file. And the dates are all over the place. Scratch that idea.

You need to find another source for download, or bite the bullet. Sorry.

No, sorry. No experience with the HP recovery manager.

Check 'All Programs' for HP Recovery (it may have been User deleted after you made the DVDs/System deleted, like on my HP, after Upgrades). If there, follow this HP Support page - https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01868333

If not; insert first DVD of the 5 (you should have labeled 1-5 as you went along) and see if the Recovery interface opens from that. Tools you want are in the 1st column. Very likely that drivers are obsolete in many cases. Good Luck

You can clean install the 1709 DVD you currently have, that will get rid of any lingering infections. Make sure you set your connection as metered then do the update.

I'm actually not sure what will happen in that case as 1803 cannot be broken up into smaller pieces so you're going to get all of it sooner or later, unless you can get a fried to download it for you, put it on a flash drive or burn it to a DVD then give it to you or send it to you.

When you do the install, you WILL NOT do a CLEAN INSTALL, as that includes formatting the C: installation partition. What you will do is a Parallel install where your existing installation will be moved into a C:\Windows.old directory structure and the new install will go in C:\Windows.

Once the install is complete, you can copy your data from C:\Windows.old\Users\<youraccountname> to the same locations under C:\Windows\Users\<youraccountname>. Once everything is copied and you are satisfied you have everything then delete the Windows.old directory tree which will also remove any and all virus infected files. This assumes none of your personal folders or files are infected. It would be a very good idea to scan them with your Anti-virus and Malwarebytes anti-malware before you start copying them to the new install locations.

    1. In regards to re-installing the HP software that came with the computer, you are likely out of luck unless:
    a) you start by re-installing Windows 7 from the factory restore DVDs and then re-upgrade to Windows 10, or
    b) it's available for download from HP's support website.

    2. In regards to reformatting the hard drive wearing it out - that is, false. The way that Windows 10 setup formats the hard drive is via quick format which only rewrites the partition table - not the entire drive. And even if you do a full format of the hard drive, it's one write and one read cycle compared to the millions of reads and writes the hard drive will see over it's life.

    3. You can export any manufacturer specific hardware drivers using the dism /online /export-driver /destination:\DestinationFolder command. You need an external storage device to hold the drivers, and you need to create a folder on the external device to hold the drivers. Then replace the "D:\DestinationFolder" with the actual drive letter and folder name you create. The command needs to be run from an administrator command prompt.

    4. The 1709 to 1803 Windows 10 upgrade requires a full download of Windows 10 no matter how it is accomplished, either from Windows update or downloading the ISO file yourself. You might just as well download Windows 10 1803 ISO file and create a USB flash drive from it to do the clean install directly with 1803 because the upgrade from 1709 to 1803 will require the full download anyway.

    5. As long as your current Windows 10 is activated with a digital license, a clean install will activate itself when connected to the internet so long as you install the same edition of Windows 10 on the same computer. If the setup asks you for a product key, there will be a small link that says "I don't have a product key". Click that link to continue installing without entering a product key.

    What I would do:
Download Windows 10 and create a Windows 10 installation USB flash drive:
    Download Windows 10
Create Bootable USB Flash Drive to Install Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

Export your drivers to a folder on the same USB flash drive using the dism /online /export-driver command.

Save any data files such as documents, music, videos, etc. to a flash drive or external hard drive.

Boot the computer from the flash drive and delete all the existing partitions on the hard drive except for any data only partitions you might have created (custom install option, next screen will show the drives/partitions and you can delete the partitions there).

Let Windows update install all the drivers available from Microsoft. Then manually re-install any hardware drivers required by items in device manager with exclamation points or shown as "unknown device), from the drivers saved to your USB flash drive.

Forget about the free HP software that came with the computer, unless you can download it from the HP support website.

ok. thanks a lot to everyone. i am really grateful.
    @mrgeek
HP recovery manager is there, but my RECOVERY partition is not there. so HP recovery manager lists all the drivers and applications present in C:\SWsetup (it says nothing found if that folder is moved). and i think HP recovery manager cannot use the DVDs to install the drivers and applications. and i booted from disc-1, it opens the recovery interface but there is no option to restore ONLY the drivers and applications. i guess the only option is what others have suggested.

HP sells recovery media (flash drives)that are similar to the DVDs used to install windows 10 and HP applications.

The HP flash drive does not have the option to use setup.exe as an in place upgrade repair with the repair your computer option. It only has the install option.

The shortcut to HP Softwaresetup.exe has options for:
    a) Hardware enabling drivers
    b) Recommended software applications
    c) Optional software applications
    d) Check for software updates
