For comparison minitool partion wizard or similar software allows you to see the contents of a partition.

It's amazing how the thread has been hijacked after my simple questions in post 1!

Did use MTPW to "Explore" my two WinRE partitions and confirmed that the 450 MB version dates back to 1803 (May 2018) and the 498 MB version shows 10/2/2018 (the 1809 release and install dates) for its files. I'd say that's proof positive that the one following the OS partition was added as part of my 1809 install. As others have reported different results, this is obviously one of those YMMV things. Might be a MBR vs. GPT layout thing, or -- as I speculated earlier -- a "some installs need more space for WinRE than 450 MB" as is apparently the case with mine. Very interesting, no matter how you slice it. Thanks!

@zbook in your #14 post explaining how Windows created the partitions I can see that clearly for C:
But I don't understand why the 1809 update would create a 450mb and a 9mb on the storage drive 320gb. Also on my 500GB storage drive it created 2 x 450mb partitions.
I checked my Son's computer with the 1803 still on it and he got no extra partitions on all his drives. That got me totally baffled again because I was the one who done the upgrade on his computer. lol

I think I will wait until later when Win 10 1809 update is fixed to do a clean install and delete partitions on all drives that are affected.

    cheers

    Scramjet,

These are some links on partitions.

    Code:
    • Recovery tools partition This partition must be at least 300 MB. This partition must have enough space for the Windows Recovery Environment tools image (winre.wim, typically between 250-300MB, depending on base language and customizations added), plus enough free space so that the partition can be captured by backup utilities:
      • If the partition is less than 500 MB, it must have at least 50 MB of free space.
      • If the partition is 500 MB or larger, it must have at least 320 MB of free space.
      • If the partition is larger than 1 GB, we recommend that it should have at least 1 GB free.
      • This partition must use the Type ID: DE94BBA4-06D1-4D40-A16A-BFD50179D6AC.
      • The recovery tools should be in a separate partition than the Windows partition to support automatic failover and to support booting partitions encrypted with Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption.
We recommend that you place this partition immediately after the Windows partition. This allows Windows to modify and recreate the partition later if future updates require a larger recovery image.
