I also used MCT to update my production desktop yesterday, and wound up with an "extra" WinRE partition following after the OS partition, to wit:
    Attachment 206636
Looks like it was scavenged from the OS partition itself, because my unallocated, overprovisioning space is apparently unchanged. What gives here?
    Thanks,

PS: Upon closer examination, looks like 1809 needs 498MB or larger for the WinRE partition. Those machines, like mine, with "only" 450 in the previous WinRE partition may find a new, bigger replacement WinRE partition on their boot/sys drives after the upgrade. Comments?
    @EdTittel

This may be far fetched, but....

The original recovery (partition #1) has the Macrium CBT data. It's possible Windows won't mess with it when the build changes and there is non-MS stuff in it. It prefers to make it's own, UN-tainted, so to speak. Purely hypothetical.

The Logs folder in the first is the date, 9/17, when I did an In-Place Repair with 1803 ISO to clean up prior to Fall Update.

Dick (@f14tomcat): I like your theory. MS could easily do a hash generate/compare to quickly check to see if a WinRE has been altered, or left alone.

Mine also got a new partition:

    1809 Update Queries-image.png

Now the question is, which one do I need and should I get rid of the other? If yes, how?

Mine look similar but different (if that makes any sense)

    Old partition:

    New partition:
    1809 Update Queries-par-2.jpg

New partition has no Macrium data.

    Panther log:
    Code:

    2018-10-02 21:44:59, Info [SetupHost.Exe] WinRE is installed at: \\?\GLOBALROOT\device\harddisk0\partition5\Recovery\WindowsRE

    The diskpart commands displayed:
partition 1: 450 MB with offset 1.024 MB
According to the link below a recovery partition < 500 MB must have at lease 50 MB of free space.
It had a deficiency of approximately 49 MB.
So it created a new recovery partition, Partition 5, that is > 500 MB that must have 320 MB free for the next Windows upgrade.

    UEFI/GPT-based hard drive partitions
    • Recovery tools partition
This partition must be at least 300 MB.
This partition must have enough space for the Windows Recovery Environment tools image (winre.wim, typically between 250-300MB, depending on base language and customizations added), plus enough free space so that the partition can be captured by backup utilities:
      • If the partition is less than 500 MB, it must have at least 50 MB of free space.
      • If the partition is 500 MB or larger, it must have at least 320 MB of free space.
      • If the partition is larger than 1 GB, we recommend that it should have at least 1 GB free.
      • This partition must use the Type ID: DE94BBA4-06D1-4D40-A16A-BFD50179D6AC.
      • The recovery tools should be in a separate partition than the Windows partition to support automatic failover and to support booting partitions encrypted with Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption.

We recommend that you place this partition immediately after the Windows partition. This allows Windows to modify and recreate the partition later if future updates require a larger recovery image.

Diskpart in my laptop shows as below.
    1809 Update Queries-20181004diskpart.png
Volume 5 is between partitions 7 and 8. It is not shown in partitions list. How to know when it was created. How to know whether it is created during 1809 update. In partition 8 I have mint.

    Ivgandhi,

Download and install Minitool partition wizard (free edition):

MiniTool Partition Wizard Free Edition - Free download and software reviews - CNET Download.com

Launch the application > right click on the row of interest > left click on explore > view dates

Thanks for the info. It is not made during update. Volume 5 is partition2. Partition1 is volume 0. Partition4 is volume 1. Why so?

    Ivgandhi,

The volumes that are associated with partition can be seen running these commands.
Open administrative command prompt and copy and paste all at one time:

    Code:
    diskpart
    list disk
    list volume
    select disk 0
    detail disk
    list partition
    select partition 1
    detail partition
    select partition 2
    detail partition
    select partition 3
    detail partition
    select partition 4
    detail partition
    select partition 5
    detail partition
    select partition 6
    detail partition
    select partition 7
    detail partition
    select partition 8
    detail partition
    exit
When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

To see what is inside each partition or volume you can use the dir command or click explore using the Minitool partition wizard.
For any hidden partition sometimes you can assign a letter to view the contents.

    Examples:
    c:
    dir
    d:
    dir
    e:
    dir
    f:
    dir
    g:
    dir
    r:
    dir

    diskpart
    list disk
    list volume
    select disk 0
    list partition
select partition 9 (change 9 to the applicable number)
    assign letter=B:

Once the letter is assigned you may be able to explore using the mini tool partition wizard.
The minitool partition wizard software often needs to be closed and reopened after the assigned letter.

For those who updated please advise:
    1. Does the Classic Shell v4.3.1 still work as some have suggested? If not what version of Open Shell is most suitable?
    2. Does the update create another recovery partition?
    3. Can anyone running MS Money confirm it still works in this update?
Thanks for the many answers on Q2. Any replies to Q1 & Q3?
