Display warning encountered during upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10

Whilst I was attempting to upgrade an old computer ( HP G72-227wm) from Windows 7 to Windows 10 , I received a warning message indicating that the laptop display chipset ( Mobile Intel 4 series Express Chipset ) is no longer supported and that the display won't be correct . Options were "Confirm" or "terminate ". So I terminated the installation. Checking Intel website confirms that the chipset is indeed no longer supported beyond windows 8. . My question is whether I should confirm and proceed ? Does this mean the default driver wont be able to display his currrent resolution or that some display options wont be available. Please advise . Tks

Unfortunately I had to discard a Dell Latitude D810 for the same reason and couldn't change the adapter, always an issue with Notebooks. I have 2 Dell Desktops with the same issue but had available Add-in PCIe X16 cards, work great. For Notebooks it generally is a failure in trying to Upgrade to Win10, I never could find suitable drivers, apparently Intel never intended to publish new ones. Only thing is to keep using Win7 for about another 15 months but then getting programs may be problematic such as Anti-Virus.

The interesting thing is that this notebook was previously upgraded to Windows 10 when it became available (I assume it was the usual auto windows download and upgrade) and my friend decided that he did not like windows 10 and so reverted back to windows 7. Now he has a change of heart and asked for my help to re upgrade to windows 10 again . I guess at that earlier time the chipset was supported by earlier versions of Windows 10 but not the latest I am wondering whether I should just image his windows 7 installation, proceed with windows 10 despite the warning. If it does not work out I can always revert back to Windows 7 via the image.

It's possible an early Version and Build did work but later flavors didn't, didn't have the same drivers available. My 2 Desktops have always been in the Technical Preview since I joined in 2014, later called Insider Preview, and as I recall that probably was a change of Version and Build that messed me up until I put the cards in.

I suspect that the 7 to 10 upgrade carried overs some Windows 7 drivers that worked under 10. I doubt that newer versions of 10 invalidated those, but I don't pretend to know.

You can try doing the install, which will presumably end with the Microsoft Basic drivers. You could then try to install the latest Win7 drivers, using compatibility mode. If that doesn't work, you may be able to extract the files from the archive (7zip should work) and do a manual install.

It's too bad that Intel makes finding the latest version of drivers for old products so difficult. The drivers at HP's web site may be the latest, but that's not likely. https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers.../model/4290948

Yes, I did find the Intel graphics driver set from your link above. Nothing directly from Intel website.

I may just bite the bullet and go for it. Worse case I can revert back to window 7 using the image

Even if you do somehow get it working with Win 10, you're in uncharted territory, as are many. You don't know what other drivers may turn out to be incompatible, and if not now, then after any successive feature update (upgrade) to the next Win 10 build (+ new drivers). You may find that MS will not deliver feature updates automatically at all - they are supposed to maintain a database of incompatible PCs, but don't expect 100% accuracy.

If you get another feature update, you will likely have to go through the same rigmarole to try to get it working again.

Ignore the warning and proceed with upgrading to Windows 10. I have an Acer Extensa laptop with the same chipset and it works OK in Windows 10 32-bit (haven't tried 64-bit). Windows 10 automatically install the proper display driver, no need to do anything after upgrade.

Yes, that's the driver but Windows 10 will install it automatically, do not worry
