Why do they make this so panful? I went to do a clean install of Education on my spare desktop PC. It will not accept my Microsoft ID, it wants your Business or School account info, your Office365 email address subscription info etc. So I go to do a local account. Now I have to answer 3 security questions, wtf? Starts over from scratch to install another edition.
This was with My Visual Studio 1809 Consumer ISO.

In my tests, MAK volume licensed Education shows license type as volume when checked, but after wiping the disk and clean installing without product key and checking again, it has been changed to retail.
    Interesting!

When I installed W10 Education from my daughter's school, I ran slmgr -dli and it showed a RETAIL license.
I'm very surprised at that. You would think that the school would use volume licensing, right?

Now how would I check on Office 2016?

    Complex licensing schemes.

I would think if the school owned the device, and only loaned it out to a student, it would be VL.
But if the student actually gets to keep it, they buy it as part of the course. It would be Retail, so they can keep using it after the course is over with no activation issues etc.

Something that I've always wondered, is it even legit for an organization to activate a production (non test) device with a MAK key? Aren't they just "for testing" to be used in leu of a KMS key "for testing"?
Before Windows 10 and Digital Licenses, you would only get "so many uses" (activations) with any one MAK key. Eventually it would stop working and not activate any more devices. Thats my understanding anyway.
Wouldn't be the first time I got it wrong and misunderstood or miss read terms of use. But Microsoft won't even tell what the "Multiple" limit is in MAK. Not that I could find? They are pretty well mum on anything to do with actual details of activation. For good reason if you think about it.
My organisation uses MAK's purchased through VL centre. MAK's are for smaller companies whereas KMS for large corporates... (there is a minimum client requirement for KMS server activation.. I think 25 or 50 depending if it's Office or Windows)

And I agree MAK's should not get DL.

@Superfly Thanks for the info, will try to remeber that. I've never worked IT or anything close to it. And getting info from Microsoft can be a PITA. And even if you find it most times you need to be a lawyer to understand it.
I assumed "wrongly" that they were a MSDN thing, in leu of a KMS key "for testing" purposes. Likely from reading misinformation way back when I first got my TechNet subscription as an MVP.
That makes me wonder even more why they get a DL? Anyway thanks again for the info.

I worked for a company that used a MAK key for all of our prod activations. We had something like 500 activations and if we ever hit that limit we could just called MS and the would reset the counter.

    Hi Kari -

It's Office 365 Pro Plus and valid for only 54 days (a semester.)

My daughter installed it when logged into her school Microsoft Account,
then was able to log out of it and use Office with no difficulty.

All works fine, except that is is active for another 54 days.

Tried a couple of things in your thread (above) to no avail.

Is there any way around that?

They give her the OS and not Office (says Subscription.) How nice, lol.
