What partitioning does Windows 10 want in my new SSD?

I recently cloned a new ssd and installed it in my desktop pc with no problems or hassles of any kind (yay!) Now I am doing the same for my laptop and it has been a mess. No luck with any cloning methods that I have tried and now I have the empty ssd in my laptop and am trying to install fresh windows 10 (1803) via a usb that I made with the Media Creation tool. When I start the install and pick the ssd for destination disk it immediately errors out with "windows can't locate the partition needed and can't create one" (or something like that) Instead of leaving my ssd all unallocated space, I think I created a single simple volume the size of the entire ssd. What partition is windows looking for?? Does the ssd have to have a drive letter before it will work?? Thanks in advance.....

During the install, delete all partitions until you have a raw, un-partitioned, unformatted disk. Click Next and let Windows 10 installer create the partitions it want.

Select the custom install option. On the screen that lists drives and partitions, delete every partition on the SSD until nothing but unallocated space exists on it. Highlight the unallocated space and click Next.

I won't be trying the install again until tomorrow afternoon, but will report here. I thought I was already choosing custom install and don't recall any options for deleting partitions but will give it a go.

Ok, so I should have left it all unallocated before I installed it in my laptop. I'll be at it again tomorrow and thanks!

So......using the "delete" button offers to wipe the chosen drive clean and this is all windows wanted. You would think they could make the error say "chosen drive must be unallocated space" instead of "windows can't be installed on drive O" ....oh well, not confusing not microsoft, right!? Anyway, I now have nice fresh 1803 on my laptop, installed on my new ssd.....and it's amazing the difference it makes!! Thanks for the guidance and this one is solved!

A computer allows us to make lots of errors in a short period of time.
The faster the computer, the less time it takes to make even more errors
