Windows 10 says SSD on Apple MacBook is 113GB but Apple OS says 120GB

Hi,

I bought a Apple MacBook Pro 8GB 120GB SSD and it says the SSD was 120GB.

However after realising I was using Windows programs more often than not I then decided to remove Mac OS and do a complete install of Windows 10 Pro without using Apples Bootcamp.

The strange thing is during the Windows 10 installation it says the SSD is only 113GB when previously it was report by Mac OS that it was 120GB.

Anyone know why I seem to have lost 7GB of disk space after deleting all the volumes and reformatting ?

Apple uses the decimal definition of "GB" - 1,000,000,000 bytes. Windows uses the binary definition - 1,073,741,824 bytes. See: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201402 .

Sometimes the term "GiB" is used to refer to the binary value. So 113GiB is ~121GB.

So if you take into account filesystem overhead and and rounding, that's likely where the remaining discrepency comes from.

Only MS uses the power of 2 way of describing large numbers. Apple, hard disk drive makers and everyone else uses SI units which are multiples of 1000.

1000 is close to 1024 but as you get larger multiples it isn't.

It isn't a ploy by Apple, disk drive makers or anything (ignore people who say it is selling a smaller drive).

All it is is a standard way of dealing with large numbers which (in terms of disk drives) didn't exist 20 years ago.
