Dual boot Windows 10 & Ubuntu UEFI

    Hello World

I install W10 & ubuntu in dual boot on my new computer. I want to use Windows boot loader instead of GRUB. It is in UEFI so I can not use easy BCD, and I have to use easy UEFI. But I am completely lost I can not find clear info. This is the objective:

I do not have an UEFI setup, so I haven't used EasyUEFI and not sure if it can help, but in theory, you must first install Windows 10, then Ubuntu. Now you are using Ubuntu's boot manager (grub). Use your Windows 10 DVD or USB to "repair" Windows 10. Now you can boot into Windows 10 but not Ubuntu. Use EasyBCD (or rather EasyUEFI) to create an Ubuntu boot entry in Windows boot loader. That's it. Sorry, I cannot provide details, last time I tried EasyBCD couldn't make it work properly with Ubuntu and not have an UEFI setup to try EasyUEFI.

You need to do 2 things.

First set your NVRAM to boot the Windows boot manager, not grub. Normally the last thing you installed (or upgraded) will try to grab it for itself. You can reset it in Windows by running bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \efi\microsoft\boot\bootmgfw.efi and note you may have to re-do this step if upgrading other OS as it will reset the path to \EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi or whatever (depending on your version).

See : BCD System Store Settings for UEFI | Microsoft Docs

Next you need to add a entry to the Windows boot list using bcdedit. This is described here : dual boot - I need to see the BCDedit for a windows10/ubuntu install both by wubi and by seperate partition - Ask Ubuntu

Make sure you use the path \EFI\ubuntu\shimx64.efi as this will work with both secure boot on or off. You can apparently use EasyUEFI to do this but I never found it very intuitive so gave up on it.

Personally I use rEFInd as a boot manager which will pick up Windows and most Linux installs (either EFI or legacy) without having to do anything.

Don't know... every time I tried to dual boot with Linux using EasyBCD didn't work. I had to resort to manually editing the BCD or just use the grub... Maybe the Linux presets in EasyBCD are outdated and don't apply to modern distros. I had even harder time trying to dual boot Windows and Mac OS...

THX All. I dont succes to as I wish. I found an alternative. I instal grub in the same partition Ubuntu. So I force from the bios the boot order. Now Windows 10 boot always in first without call/use grub. When I want use Ubuntu I launch from bios.
It's fine for I have a low use about Ubuntu...only for some emulator prototype work better than windows.

Please yourself. You are dong something strange but not impossible.

You can obviously install GRUB or SysLinux (on the VBR if you want) so you do for sure not have to play with that.

Just my thought though, I'm sure it is fine (whatever it is)

On Legacy BIOS, you choose a Disk to boot from. BIOS will take you to the MBR that will take you to a master boot loader (Windows or Grub) that can have an option to transfer to another boot loader.
On a UEFI BIOS, you choose a boot loader. On the EFI disk partition you may have many boot loaders. Once you choose one, it will transfer the boot sequence to another partition (on same disk or another disk).

On a M.2 GPT drive I have Win 7 and Lubuntu. On BIOS, the boot priority is Win 7.
To run Lubuntu, I launch the boot menu (F12 on Gigabyte MB) during POST.

    Exactly same except Windows 10.
