Strategy to move from insider to regular build, without data loss?

    Hi guys,
as the headline says, any chance to move to the regular builds (1809 when it is released) without setting everything up new from scratch?
    Something like an inplace-up/downgrade?
I'm on 18242.1000 now, but intend to use this machine now as a"HTPC", so no more need for insider-builds.
(And to be honest, I'm fed up, too...)
    Any ideas?
    thanks in advance.

Not possible. You are doing using Skip Ahead build which will be officially released in April 2019.

You could use tools like laplink pcmover to backup programs but you need to do a clean install or wait another 6 months.

    Hi folks

if it's not too late do the following :

    1) save current insider build you are using (MR or whatever backup software you are using)

    2) restore your last "pre-insider" build. (preferably BEFORE you clicked join insider program)

    3) update to current levels of service

    4) update to the new release (1809) when it comes out.

Now in the mean time if you still want to keep using insider builds until 1809 available

    5) save / image updated current build (what you have after step 3)

    6) restore insider build

    carry on.

Then say once a week or whenever you want to install a new application

save insider, restore image made after step 5, update, backup and restore insider again.

with decent SSD's and if you only have your OS on a partition / separate SSD the backup process won't take long - 15 mins is about average on a typical machine with approx. same time for restores.

You could also I suppose dual boot but I never like the idea of dual booting -- just my feeling though since if you get problems with HDD etc you lose TWO OS'es !!!.

    Cheers

thanks for your replies, sadly as expected...
So I will wait until 1809 is released, make a backup and after that do a clean install.

Or as far as I know, you can leave the insider program on that computer and wait for the release build to catch up. But not 100% sure about that.
