    Reinstalling Windows 1703 15063.x to 15063.1324

    Greetings All,

Ever since installing the last Cumulative Update (15063.1324), my desktop has been freezing up intermittently and my DisplayLink USB Monitor Adapter has been flashing on and off, again on an intermittent basis.

So, thinking that there will only be (hopefully) one more Cumulative Update before 1703 reaches end-of-life on Oct 9th, i am thinking of reinstalling 1703 from the beginning via DVD made when it came out. My question is, can i install 15063.11 and use the standalone 15063.1324 file from MS catalogue to bring Windows up to date or is there a succession of CUs that have to be installed first??

I'm hoping i can do it that way to more or less start fresh while keeping my docs and apps intact and, hoping that my computer hiccups will cease.

Thanks for any and all replies,

    Ray

Yes, that should work. The latest Cumulative Update includes all fixes from previous CUs, that's why it's called 'cumulative'.

In order to keep your apps intact you will have to use your 1703 DVD to perform an in-place repair upgrade. That is the only way to reinstall Windows and keep your installed apps.

I presume, as you mentioned end-of-life, that you have used Pro's Defer Features Update options to defer for as long as possible, up to it's maximum 365 days - an option that would expire around the eol date. My question to you is what do you plan to do after Oct 9th?

It is for situations like this that a system image would be useful. We continually recommend making system images with something like Macrium Reflect Free. A problem like this could have been resolved easily by restoring a system image from before the update that caused problems. Something to look into after you get back to a working system...

Hehe...just making sure mate! However, your less-then-affirming "...should work" throws some doubt, even on your part it would seem. :P

Yup, am aware of the procedure thanks - do it from within Windows

Actually, i use both 'Windows Update Blocker' along with 'Windows Update MiniTool' to keep the dogs at bay. Even though i hide the sneaky updates that bug me to update to 1803, i just hide them again till they decide to raise their ugly heads. I'd update to 1803 but had tried to upgrade to 1709 & encountered several GSOD which was a result of the graphics card needing updating. Only problem being, it is a legacy card with no more driver updates available (last one was Jan/15!) I have a dual-boot with 1703 & 1803 (which GS'd when i tried using the graphics driver i'm using fine with 1703) So, i just use the generic MS driver but it messes up the resolution on my main screen. Pain in the tookus but i wanted to try to see if skipping 1709 to 1803 would work - nope, same graphic driver issue. So i will stay with 1703 indefinitely & practice safe-surfing!

Yup, use that too but unfortunately, in my belief i would not run into any problems, i deleted the backup created just before the update. Actually, tonight has not been too bad but like i said, it's intermittent, so tomorrow could be back to the freezing up.

Thank you for your quick response - i appreciate it. Oh, greetings from the Queen's realm over the pond!

My 'reluctance' to commit to a definitive 'Yes' is just that I haven't tried it with 1703. I have tried installing earlier versions then jumping to the latest CU without a problem, but I've not done so specifically with 1703. I can see no reason why it shouldn't work though.

I've Googled the NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE / nForce 430 from your specs and see what you mean. Most threads talk about using the last W8.1 driver, but generally drift off into 'it's about time you upgraded your card'. Any reason why you can't do that?

If not, well even 1507 is still getting CUs despite being long out of support (how does that even work?) so you should be able to keep 'safe' for a while longer. Probably have to download the standalone from the update catalog though, not unless you can convince Windows Update you are on the LTSB.
