Odd Freezes on Startup both normal and repair mode - any suggestions?

Whats odd on this is that it comes and goes. Brief history - system is
ACER 5560 laptop which came with 7 and was successfully upgraded to 10 several years ago
had 500gb drive, but now is Seagate 1tb and 16gb ram

    What happened:
I had put the system in sleep mode, and then later noticed it had come back on unexpectedly, and was at a black screen with no disk activity. I tried mouse and keyboard but no changes, then did a forced power down.
Upon restart, I got errors indicating a missing windows partition. Routine checks and attempts to do CHKDSK failed and most programs showed the partition locked.
I suspect the last major update (1803?) started up and did not finish fully. I had been postponing for lack of disk space, but had cleared enough for it just prior to this.

Started up a good rescue DVD and then a partition rescue, and found the program showing over 400 possible partition tables.. (small shriek here along with the usual words)
Did a recovery from the first and most likely 10 partitions and recovered much of the programs, and what appears to be all the data to an external drive.
Figuring its about 5 years old and a good time to replace the drive I got a Seagate 1Tb and put in, then downloaded with the media creation tool to a USB, and did a fresh install of Win10 home. All went well

But - after a longer session of copying recovered files back on the new drive, I came in to see it frozen, black screen and unresponsive. Power cycled - and it would start Windows and get one circle of the balls going round the freeze. Three attempts and then the automatic repair would start and freeze in almost the same amount of time.
Put in a DVD, then a USB and it would not see them or let me into BIOS or BOOT SELECT screens - so apparently the keyboard is off during this.. (?)
Pulled the new hard drive and then was able to run the USB or DVD. Thinking AHA! bad drive?

Put new drive back in, and it runs fine starting in normal mode with a reasonable start time. Able to shut down and start up several times with no problems.

A day goes by and again its running when it should have been asleep, and its frozen on black screen and cant boot or auto repair.
Pull the hard drive, and repeat - and its working again. Tried fix MBR fix boot etc no problems but this keeps acting up.

Leaning toward problems on mobo but cant explain why it works ok when it wants to.. its not a heat issue as I have tried it with a cold board and hot and its not going to start any further than a few seconds into the first Windows Logo till I pull the drive and re-insert.

Not being as familiar as some with UEFI I was wondering if this a legacy bios laptop was getting iffy with the windows boot loader and maybe not being detected correctly by the setup.

I looked up the ST1000 seagate in case there were some reports of such, or firmware upgrades but did not see anything and the Acer Bios is the latest available for this older system. Had it not worked well for several years with 10, I would suspect compatibility issues - or maybe this last major update changed how they boot?

I don't generally ask for help much - as I have been at this since way before PCs came out - did corporate IT and network admin for a major oil company in the early 90s, and ran a one man PC shop for around 20 years afterwards, so I have run into quite a few odd ones - but this one is a real headscratcher... so I post here in hopes one of you will have something to try I did not think of. Thanks for any help and for taking the time to read it - I would rather have too much info than not enough on such posts.

Hi, just a wild guess given the scenario: as you kind of suggest, hardware or BIOS issues aside, it could be failing to update or upgrade, especially given the 1 day before it seems things go haywire.

What build of Windows do you install? Has that changed through this sequence?

Have you checked to see if it has done or failed to complete a feature update (or other updates?)
    - Update History in Settings, check if Windows.old has been created, if unbootable, check properties, details of any file such as explorer.exe

Given the roughly 1 day before things go haywire, how about doing a clean install, not connecting it to the internet or blocking updates (there's a thread here on how to do it completely (that's the word to search for), and seeing if it's stable for, say, 3 days?

Another possibility is an incompatible driver update.

With each major build, a new driver package is delivered. Some users esp. of older machines find that in moving to build 1803 suddenly weird things happen or sthg won't work. In some cases that's been one low level MS provided driver different from 1709.

Hi Programmer1971. Welcome to the TenForums @Programmer1971

If I read correctly you know have the Seagate 1TB installed and it is running a version of 1803. Any this drive has the standard number of partitions.

Do you know if all maintenance has been applied, that is 1803 17134.285 ?

I wonder if Windows Maintenance is also helping you by attempting to install a video driver for your device. Are there any failed updates and in particular any failed driver updates. They are listed at bottom of Update History.

I think the first thing I would do is disable Windows Drivers Updates. Option 4 this tutorial

Enable or Disable Driver Updates in Windows Update in Windows 10

Some progress. Thanks for your help!

The listed version after a fresh install is 1803 17134.112. I started a fresh load using the older drive, and again it worked till second reboot... Apparently after AMD driver update. So I will look at your links on drivers in 10.. Had not thought of it. Trying putting windows boot manager at last spot in boot order too. Video on this laptop is AMD HD6520G according to HWINFO, but I have seen cases in past where drivers for standalone cards were tried on CPU with integrated graphics and while reporting same model chipset had some off results.. More later.. Thank you both for help..was starting to loose more gray hairs..lol

    Great.

If you clean install off the internet, then block Driver updates you should be able to control.

To sweep all display drivers from your machine most recommend DDU

Thanks - I will check out the Wagnardsoft product. I am writing this on the system in question. Its behaving some tonight, but I did see more which is hopefully helpful to report.
At several points in testing I had to take out the DVD, the USB stick I used to test and install from, and the hard drive before I could get the BIOS entry option to show up. And I can confirm that the USB stick and keyboard (both internal and a USB external were tried) are not seen if the BIOS startup option is not shown. That makes me think its a hardware problem on the mobo… When that happens we see the usual ACER startup screen shows, but the text that is usually on the bottom for F2 to enter BIOS and F12 to select Boot device is gone. When this happens it will not boot from the HD, the DVD or the USB - and pressing any of the usual keys to enter BIOS seem to be ignored. At this point, it will attempt to boot, and show the blue four pane Windows Logo, and start the circling dots - but freeze before a full circle of motion happens. Likewise after the three failed boots, the auto repair will start, but freeze the same way.

Currently it will sleep and restart ok - and has started a number of times, this after I did stop the loading of the AMD graphics driver - but tell it to power down and it will go almost off, black screen and freeze again. I will do some more testing with the drivers, and do some restore points to help test. I did make a restore point earlier and using the PE repair disk was able to do a restore to keep from doing fresh install again.

So - thanks to everyone's suggestions, I am making headway - and now leaning more toward an odd system board problem or a quirk with the boot manager and this older hardware. And, while I don't fully trust it, its running at the moment. Thanks again All.
